Specifically it examines chapter 9, "The Meaning of Nihilism for Japan". This one examines his discussion of how Japan opened itself up to a crisis of nihilism precisely through modernization and westernization, and what the possibilities for post-World War II are.

Nishitani Keiji, The Self - Overcoming Of Nihilism - Nihilism, Japan, And Westernization

The Technology Modernization Fund has allocated $13.8 million to enhance nuclear emergency response capabilities at the Department of Energy and establish safety standards for artificial intelligence at the Department of Commerce. The Energy Department will receive $3.8 million to upgrade its radiological response data portal, aiding the operations of the Nuclear Emergency Support Team. The Commerce Department is granted $10 million to support the growth of its AI Safety Institute at the National Institute of Standards and Technology, which was established to evaluate AI risks and formulate safety guidelines.

In other news, the White House announced measures to protect children’s privacy and safety online, including efforts by multiple federal agencies to address image-based sexual abuse and other threats exacerbated by artificial intelligence. The National Institute of Standards and Technology is working on new methods to estimate and verify ages online, and the Department of Education has released guidelines to ensure nondiscriminatory use of AI in educational technologies.

Pete Waterman, a former Technology Modernization Fund adviser and U.S. Digital Services engineer, has been tapped as the new FedRAMP director, the General Services Administration announced in an internal email Monday. His appointment comes after he served at GSA as a senior technical adviser for TMF until earlier this year. Waterman, who officially started Monday, will report to Lauren Bracey Scheidt, assistant commissioner of the agency’s Technology and Transformation Services Office of Solutions, and work to “build on the FedRAMP team’s considerable transformation momentum, and guide program strategy for 2025 and beyond.” 


The Biden administration is reporting major progress in its quest to deploy half a million public chargers by the end of the decade. The Energy Department on Tuesday said that there were now more than 192,000 public charging ports available throughout the country and that since the start of President Joe Biden’s term, the number of public EV chargers has doubled. The announcement of those milestones came as the government announced more than half a billion dollars to nearly 30 states, two tribes and Washington, D.C. to build even more charging infrastructure.

FedRAMP has a new director; the Biden administration charges ahead on electric vehicle charger goals

Most banks right now are at a crossroads: Either they choose to overhaul their legacy systems or come to a point where they will continue to battle the complex legacy spaghetti of multiple software systems, struggle to access talent that can manage their tech, and alienate customers that expect the best of everything. Although the choice is obvious, going through with core modernization is extremely hard. Guests on the show have been excited about moving to the cloud for many years, but very few have really taken it on, which is why when I have the chance to talk to not one, but two individuals that have hands-on experience with helping banks modernize, I really dive into their recipe of success. 

Joining us on the show today is Russell Barrett, COO at Valley Bank, who shares  the path to modernization his $60 billion institution took, how he and his leadership team devised the bank’s change management policies, the role of consultants in this process, and the challenges the bank faced. Pouring his deep experience into this conversation on Valley Bank’s work is David Feuer, CPO of Galileo Financial Technologies, who brings his expertise of handling and guiding multiple banks of all sizes on their transformation journey.

During his four-and-a-half years as South Dakota’s chief information officer, Jeff Clines says he watched as the neighboring Wyoming churned through several of its own CIOs. Now roughly one month into the CIO role in Wyoming, Clines says one of his top priorities is to bring stability to the state’s IT. “[I’ve been] trying to understand why there was so much turnover in the leadership in Wyoming. What was the impact there? … One of [the staff’s] big desires for the new CIO is stability in the consistency of vision and implementation of that vision.”

After heavy leadership turnover, Wyoming’s new CIO wants to bring stability

The Miss Netherlands beauty pageant has officially come to an end, marking the close of a significant chapter in its history. Last year’s winner, Rikkie Kollé—the first trans woman to hold the title—was the final contestant to wear the iconic silk sash. Kollé used her platform to champion inclusivity, a theme central to the decision to end the contest.

Director Monica van Ee explained that empowering women, the pageant’s mission, has grown challenging amid increasing criticism and societal pressure. Unrealistic beauty standards perpetuated by social media have further fueled insecurity among women, prompting the need for change.

While this marks the end of Miss Netherlands, it’s not the end of the organization’s efforts. A new initiative, Niet Meer Van Deze Tijd (“No Longer of This Time”), will replace the pageant, focusing on empowering women through issues like mental health, diversity, and self-expression rather than traditional beauty ideals.

This shift reflects broader efforts to modernize beauty contests globally. Miss Universe recently opened its doors to older women and married contestants, signaling progress in a traditionally rigid industry. These changes aim to create a more inclusive and representative future for women in pageantry and beyond.

The cosmetics and grooming products industry is like the wild wild West. Until recently, the regulatory system failed to keep consumers safe from toxicants that likely increase their offspring’s “risks of cancer, fertility issues, neurological deficits, and immune dysfunction.” 

And then came the Modernization of Cosmetics Regulation Act of 2022, or MoCRA.

Today, we talk about MoCRA with subject matter expert Dahlia Kelada,  founder/CEO of TopicalFormulator.com and Salve Naturals & Native Earth. When Congress passed the new law, it did so with the goal to help ensure the safety of multiple cosmetic products many consumers use daily. MoCRA went into effect in late December 2024. 

Dahlia is a graduate of the GW School of Medicine and Health Sciences, where she earned a Master of Science in Health Science with a focus in Integrative Medicine. She has 20+ years of product development/commercialization experience supporting over 80 brands. MoCRA is the most significant expansion of U.S. Food & Drug Administration’s authority to regulate cosmetics since the Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic (FD&C) Act was passed in 1938.
