THE ASTROLO-J MONOLOGUES

Join Non-Binary Diva Jordy Joans at the afters in her very own living room for their first-ever interactive cabaret. Featuring original monologues about why dating men of all star signs doesn’t work and covering highs and lows of dating within Edinburgh’s queer community, Jordy’s funny, filthy and heart-wrenching stories about each zodiac sign will look back at a decade of sex and everything that didn’t go right. Spoiler alert: all these men are awful. You’ll be dancing along to twelve iconic pop tracks accompanying each heartbreak, as Jordy and her ex-lovers teach you that self-love really is the foundation of it all.
 With additional support from Naomi Head and Tash McPhillips, Jordy brings this preview show to the Netherbow Theatre at the Scottish Storytelling Centre June 29th for Pride Month.

Budd – a nickname since his childhood – was a renowned historian of the Second World War and military intelligence. He wrote acclaimed books about the rise of Hitler, extermination camps and the Nuremberg trials and taught in Birmingham, Alabama, where he was a civil rights activist in the 1960s. He was regarded as a generous and gifted teacher. 

Around 2010 Budd’s wife – who I’ll call J – phoned me and begged me to visit him. She told me she’d cared for him for many years at home but was finding it hard to cope with his increasing physical aggression and having to repeatedly bring him back to bed at night. 

One night Budd pushed J down the stairs breaking her arm (she said he didn’t recognise her). Reluctantly she agreed to admit him into a care home for a few weeks as respite while she recovered. The move went appallingly. Almost immediately Budd threw a dining chair through a window and cut himself badly trying to climb out. He also hit one of the carers. 

J told me that Budd had been sectioned and then ‘dumped’ in an awful care home where he hid in a cupboard under the stairs and ran up and down the corridors trying to get out and that she had to drive for two hours almost every day to help him shower and clean his teeth as the carers couldn’t do it. The manager of the home told me and they’d taken him because no one else would and J was welcome to take him home if she wasn’t happy. 

With J’s permission I recorded Budd’s words during my visits hoping that if I listened to them outside the noisy care home I might better understand what was happening to him – and what he was trying to communicate. I believe the years he spent trawling through films and photographs of concentration camps impacted on the way he saw his situation. There were times when Budd didn’t seem to realise that the voice he could hear was his. 

Sean Barrett's performance was based on a recording I made in the care home and it’s as accurate as we could make it. 

I don’t really know what J hoped that my input might achieve but after a few weeks I decided to stop going and suggested that if she was able J needed to do the same.

Born in Parsons Green grew up on Halford Rd in Fulham London SW6 UK 1965

I attended Fulham Nursery then Primary School until 1976

Attending Mary Boon Secondary School for Girls in West Kensington W14 until 1982

I learnt folk guitar at beaufort Primary School attending evening classes with my late Mother God Love and Keep her Soul that was one of my secular music influences outside of traditional hymns. I began writing my own songs as a child. Performing at school and church. 

Home life was strict, though I started out as a sickly child. I grew into a tomboy geek who loved riding racer bikes, plane watching, and airports locations.

My late mother insisted I gain some form of secretarial training to fall back on, which I did by taking office studies at South Thames College  Putney SW15 1983

I left home at 17, helped out by older siblings. 

All our early lives as a family was very abusive making us a family of abused and abused.

My late parents were very religious and became converts of the Seventh Day Adventist Religion. They worked hard to make sure we all had the privilege of learning an instrument, as a mother, I made sure that legacy continued.

In 2015, I self-published my first eBook of poems, which grew into the Natural Flowism Book Series. 

By 2016, I began buying  distributions plans to distribute Monologue Albums:1st: Behind the Scenes of Freedom 2nd:Enough both were simple format recordings recorded on my Laptop Voice Recorder before finding the confidence to release music my 1st Ep: Bad Guitar in 2018, 2nd Ep: Blind Fingers and my Ears [B.F.A.M.E] Heavy Improv' Journal  in 2019, and a growing number of singles, and in house monologue and music radio podcast styled shows for my website.


My main influences and genres are rooted in my initial introduction to music, which began with christian sabbath worship traditional hymns. Secular influences started with nursery rhymes, then military band, followed by folk guitar, boogie, country, and eventually pop, rock, soul jazz funk rare groove.

A Freedom of Being!

Persistent and Nasty is a script-reading, debate and art as activism initiative for women and gender minorities in the stage and screen industries. We are committed to an intersectional approach and aim to use the space we’ve created to provide a platform for the spectrum of marginalised voices in our culture.

Through a series of script readings, live debates and a regular podcast series, we aim to amplify the unrepresented voices in theatre and film.

Our goal is to create a project that is safe and supportive, but that is also an act of protest. Persistent and Nasty is about changing the cultural narrative through the stories we tell.

Established by David Clegg in 2001 the Trebus Project has worked with over a thousand people with dementia in care homes and the community. It is now the largest archive of free to access interviews with people with dementia in the world. 

Clegg was awarded a British Empire medal in 2019 for his work with people with dementia.
