Using James Olson's book, "Fair Play," I we start to wrap up our season by looking at how moral compromise is inevitable if one chooses to participate in government.

(214) S9E57 Christian Anarchism - Moral Compromise is Inevitable in Government

One of the most pernicious dangers for people of faith is assuming that Jesus's moral instincts match our own. Sometimes this looks like assuming that God hates the same people we hate (nope - God loves them, the same as God loves us). Other times that looks like assuming our moral justifications would earn God's sign-off (nope - God is perfectly ready to challenge us to do better). In both instances, our challenge is to remember that while we always see only in part, God sees the whole. And much as this challenges our biases and self-justifications, this reality is actually really good news. Because it means that even when God is rebuking us, this correction is a message of love. It is an invitation to expect more from God and from ourselves.

It's important to be able to intentionally address what's going on in the world with your teenagers. This will help keep them from becoming numb to what marginalized communities are experiencing. Nobel Laureate Oleksandra Matviychuk on Ukraine’s Moral Core

In this talk, given in the course of Franciscan University of Steubenville's 2013 Annual Conference on Christian Philosophy, I set out what could be St. Anselm's response to the guiding question of the conference:  "Must Morality be Grounded on God". 

In typical Anselmian manner, I say, Yes and No, and go on to discuss how Anselm would envision the possibility of a purely secular de-Christianized morality on the basis of his moral theory, and explain reasons why for Anselm any adequate moral theory and practice would preclude such an approach.  I focus on God as the ontological ground of value, contributions Christian revelation and reflection make to moral theory, and what ongoing practical engagement with God and the Christian community provides to moral practice.
