This lecture discusses key ideas from the Utilitarian philosopher, Jeremy Bentham's work, Offenses Against Oneself, a posthumously published part of his Introduction to the Principles of Morals and Legislation.

Here we examine some of the problems that arise out of punishing same-sex relationships using what Bentham calls the "political sanction", i.e. legislation and enforcement.. One of these, which Bentham thinks is a rather weak argument, is that this tends to make more people aware of the perceived offense and give them the idea that it must be pleasurable, since it is being punished. He also raises the likelihood of false or malicious prosecutions, which require only that someone make claims to have seen two men together, and views this as a significant problem. A third problem is that this also makes men liable to extortion or blackmail.

Jeremy Bentham, Offenses Against Onself - Problems With Punishing Same-Sex Relationships

This lecture discusses key ideas from the Utilitarian philosopher, Jeremy Bentham's work, Offenses Against Oneself, a posthumously published part of his Introduction to the Principles of Morals and Legislation.

Here we examine the range of other perceived sexual offenses Bentham discusses and evaluates, all of which involve the feature "that they consist in procuring certain sensations by means of an improper object."  Bentham considers five types:
"1. Of the proper species but at an improper time: for instance, after death.
2. Of an object of the proper species and sex, and at a proper time, but in an improper part.
3. Of an object of the proper species but the wrong sex. 
4. Of a wrong species.
5. In procuring this sensation by one's self without the help of any other sensitive object."

Of all of these, oddly enough but consistent with some of the medical opinions of his time, he considers the last one, i.e. masturbation, to be the most pernicious.

In this invited lecture at Marist College, hosted by the Catholic Studies Program as part of their Marcelin Lecture Series, I narrate some of the key points and developments in the story of how we ended up with the current list of the Seven Deadly Sins, which are: Gluttony, Lust, Greed, Sloth, Wrath, Envy, and Pride.  Originally, these start out as the Eight Capital Vices, a list which includes sadness, acedia, and vainglory, and which does not include envy.  So, how did we end up with the list we know today?  

The story involves Christian monks in the Egyptian desert, Benedictine monks, a reluctant pope, poets, scholastic professors, confessors, and mystics, and ranges over a millennium of thinkers and texts.  In the process, I discuss some of the key players:  Evagrius Ponticus, John Cassian, Gregory I, Alcuin, Peter Lombard, Thomas Aquinas, and Dante Alighieri

This portion of the talk discusses how the eight capital vices get transformed into the schema of the seven deadly sins. A key person in that transformation is the Benedictine monk and pope Gregory I, who makes pride into the root of the seven deadly sins

From The Eight Capital Vices To The Seven Deadly Sins -  The Shift To The Seven Sins

I examine the quality, ie 'nature' of mercy. i find that it is a method, like morals, to remove compassion. Mercy is worse, though, because it extends power differentials and is virtue signalling compassion without needing to be compassionate. In the 4 parts I investigate hope, false-hope, René Girard's theory of Mimetic Rivalry and scapegoating, Shakespeare's play *The Merchant of Venice* as cautionary tale against mercy, morals and revenge, Christ's solution to social anomy, and how these are all related to untreated unconscious anxiety and 'the frequency' of addiction.

1A. The Quality of Mercy pt 1 of 4

In part 2 of my 4 part series, I dig deep into the malevolent nature of mercy, primarily using Shakespeare's play The Merchant of Venice. I discover that the play is really a caution against anger and revenge, which use the tools of mercy and morals to rationalise the energy of being a social justice warrior by removing compassion.

2A. The Quality of Mercy pt 2 of 4

In part 3 I extend my analysis that mercy (and morals) to René Girard's solution to in-group violence of innate mimetic desire. I argue that Girard is only partially correct because mimetic rivalry would not exist without some kind of group morality structure. Innate mimesis is a form of puer aeturnus, eternal childhood. Girard failed to understand that that innate character of mimesis he describes was to have been left behind in childhood.

3A. The Quality of Mercy pt 3 of 4

The final part of my 4 part look, I wander into how they related to hope and 'false-hope'. I conclude that mercy and morals are a sophisticated form of anxiety analgesic, ie, that they are another addiction, albeit well hidden and very nasty because they work directly against Christ's advocacy to 'turn th ther cheek'. Like all other addictions, of which I now see 'false-hope' is one, their palliative nature is to deny living in the moment with what is exactly as it is without any self-delusion. And I list a series of lists of living well guidance systems over the millennia by thinkers and spiritual leaders. Not one of them include moral behaviour or mercy, not even the Bible, in them. I share an astonishing synchronicity with a white female preying mantis, discovery my own false-hope, and realise that attending synchronicities is a simple yet subtle and easily misread important method of being now. This is a super and uplifting conclusion, after which you will likely wonder about, and hopefully quit, being mercifully moral.

4A. The Quality of Mercy - pt 4 of 4

“One Little Word” is a neo-soul reflection on belief, kindness, and the fragile hope that doing good might bring good in return. Built around the simple but powerful word “if,” the song explores the space between ideals and reality—where our hopes, doubts, and intentions live. Through thoughtful, conversational lyrics, it considers the possibility that the way we treat each other might shape the world we move through.
     Rather than accepting ready-made answers, the song turns inward, questioning the voices that claim authority over what is right and wrong. It embraces the idea of building a personal moral compass through experience, reflection, and ongoing self-work. “One Little Word” ultimately becomes a meditation on personal responsibility and the quiet effort of trying to live in a way that feels honest, thoughtful, and true.
