Soundtrack for a video installation.
Fragments of radio communications accompany archival footage of a family from the 1960s and 70s.   
The current title of this work is inspired by Don De Lillo’s science fiction short story in which two astronauts receive unidentified radio signals while orbiting above an Earth torn apart by war. These radio signals are later revealed to have been old broadcasts from Earth.

"I wrote "entrée / en mouvement / encore" back in 2016-17. The title reflects the starting idea for the piece, which was to reflect on the concert situation as some sort of ritual that has its entrance, which later generates movement and which keeps on moving after this energy has been thrown into the room. A ritual consisting on both artists and audience, unable to exist without each other. 

This idea led me to think about the popular thought experiment "if a tree falls in the forest..." which later led to reading George Berkeley's "A Treatise Concerning The Principles of Human Knowledge" (1710) to whom the thought is commonly (mis)attributed to. The three movements are composed from extracts from the book, translated into morse code and used as musical material. 

This would become my first "text based" piece, a technique that would evolve in some of my later works such as "one for two" (2018) "YES FOR NO" (2020) and "three_four_maybe" (2021)."

On August 16, 2024, I recorded these clips from two Russian number stations: S06, also known as "Russian Man," and M12, an active Morse channel. The recordings were made at frequencies of 11149.0 kHz and 15931.0 kHz. You'll hear one station in each ear, with an added layer of static from 27909.0 kHz. This mix was created using Audacity and is relatively simple. Enjoy listening!

Cynthia Zaven is a composer, pianist and artist based in Beirut. 
Her projects combine a variety of media to explore the relationship between sound, memory and identity through interwoven narratives. Works include Untuned Piano Concerto With Delhi Traffic Orchestra (performance, 2006), Morse Code Composition (ICA, 2012), and Perpetuum Mobile, a 12 channel sound installation that was exhibited within the Temple of Bacchus, at the World Heritage site of Baalbeck, and nominated for the Prix Ars Electronica Award 2017. 

Since 1993, Zaven has also created sound design for theater, live performance, dance and conceptual art projects. She has collaborated with musicians and vocalists such as the Neue Vocalsolisten, the Ensemble Modern and the Danapris String Quartet. She has also composed original scores for films that have been screened at venues worldwide including the film festivals at Cannes, Locarno and Toronto, as well as the Walker Art Center, the ICA in London and Oxford's Museum of Modern Art. 
Her music has been published by the Berlin based label, Staalplaat. 
She is currently a professor of classical piano at the Higher National Conservatory of Music in Beirut.

Nada Samir is a gifted German singer and songwriter hailing from Frankfurt am Main. Born on June 18th, 1996, she has created a unique sound blending elements of pop, indie pop, and R&B soul. Nurturing her passion for music from a young age, she began writing her own songs at the tender age of 13, and by 16, she was sharing her talent by posting cover songs on YouTube. Her music career took off in February 2020, with the release of her debut single "Your Promise." April 2nd, 2021 marked the release of her critically acclaimed debut album, "Heartbroken." And on January 1st, 2023, she has recently dropped her sophomore album "See You Next Life." Her music is an honest reflection of her feelings and experiences, delving into themes of depression and self-discovery.
