He is a consummate diplomat who got into Trade and never left.  He was posted in Geneva as the Deputy Permanent Representative for the Mission of Australia to the WTO back in 2012, and although he didn’t initially intend to return, he is back as Ambassador with the intention and goal to deliver on many of the pending items we are currently working on at the WTO. DDG Johanna Hill has been involved with the WTO since its inception and has worked directly with it at various points in her career. Her career in multilateral and bilateral affairs is long, and she has also worked in the private sector.

We had an insightful conversation covering a wide range of topics, from her early years in El Salvador to her commitment to education, which led her to Tufts University and Columbia University.

She then worked for El Salvador’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Ministry of Economy, where she was appointed as Vice Minister of Economy.

This solid and long experience has brought her to the WTO, where she now serves as DDG.

It was a pleasure talking to her and hearing more about her story and thoughts on the Multilateral Trade System.

So it was a real pleasure to invite CEIP’s Stewart Patrick back into the Virtual Studio to talk about the shape and influence of the BRICS, or BRICS+, as it is often referred to these days.

Stewart Patrick is senior fellow and director of the Global Order and Institutions Program at the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace (CEIP). 

His primary areas of research focus are the shifting foundations of world order, the future of American internationalism, and the requirements for effective multilateral cooperation on transnational challenges. 

Stewart is an expert in the history and practice of multilateralism. He is the author of a number of volumes and most recently he has led the research at CEIP for the volume: “BRICS Expansion and the Future of World Order: Perspectives from Member States, Partners, and Aspirants”.

Stewart has authored many articles, essays, chapters, and reports on problems of world order, U.S. global engagement, the United Nations and other international organizations, and the management of global issues.

Every day, Peter Hawkins wakes up filled with determination to make a difference. As the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) Representative in Yemen, he puts that boundless energy into helping young people survive one of the world’s most intractable humanitarian crises.
 
“Despite serving in some of the most challenging and difficult places, I've been lucky,” he says. “I've loved my life. I have no regrets. Every day I wake up, I feel there's something I can do. There's things I enjoy. So nothing keeps me awake, everything keeps me going during the day.”

After a decade of conflict and collapse, a new generation of Yemenis are yearning for a better tomorrow: “So the children sit there in these classrooms with no walls, no floors, no desks, and learn, and they're proud about what they learn. And they come to me and say, ‘Look, don't worry, we will continue to learn. But if you can give us desks, if you can fill up the walls and you can give us a floor and a blackboard, it will be even better.’”

In this episode, Peter Hawkins reflects on the striking resilience of the people he serves, and shares how his upbringing in Ethiopia and service in Iraq taught him to never give up working for change. For him, the biggest challenge today is not so much about raising awareness, but about action. “It is so important to understand how one side of the world is so lucky and the other side of the world is still desperately poor, and how we bring those two together.”

At a time when multilateralism is under constraint, Louise Agersnap, who leads WHO’s Innovation Hub, reflects on the concept of the « metacrisis »—a fundamental questioning of our entire operating system—and how responses of fostering demand-led innovation, bridging cross-sector partnerships, and launching mechanisms such as the WHO Digital Innovation Investment Platform can contribute renewal. Agersnap discusses opportunities and challenges in engaging with innovative approaches to promoting global health equity, and the importance of democratizing access to technologies like AI-enabled tools and robotic telesurgery.
