The 3rd track from the EP The Elemental Concoction. After being pounded by heavy hard drums, Airsong is an empty desolate wasteland. But there is warmth in the wind, and something a little unnerving at the edges.

I had some fun popping balloons, and recording an air rifle. But all other wind all sounds very similar, but has subtle differences. Bringing everything down and leaving plenty of space felt the best way to really experience the subtleties.

This is the 2nd track on the EP The Elemental Concoction. You will recognise the rising synth from the previous track. This is all big drums and harsh synths. 

Everything you can hear is a sample from one of my unique recordings of the earth. Some are in a purer form than others.
 
The Drums were mainly taken from recordings of stones dropping onto dried compost. The synth were a blend of mud splats, boiling mud and pouring mud into a bucket.

It has a lot of energy. I think it represents the Earth element as something chaotic, relentless and a force to be reckoned with.

This is from the EP The Elemental Concoction. After all the elements compositions had been completed, a layer was taken from each, and without much more than a little fading in and out, a new song appeared. 

Of the combinations available, this is the one that felt as though it flowed the most  effortlessly. In some ways it is more than the sum of its parts.

This is the culmination of a long project to gather the natural sounds that are been around us, and have been made on this planet as it has evolved over the last 4.5 billion years, and to represent them using modern techniques.

This is a radio edit of the 5th and final track on the EP The Elemental Concoction.

It starts off as a trickle into a small stream, but builds and it's not long before its expanded into an ocean.

With all of the samples here it seem that I can hear that liquid feel to them. I recorded underwater, in ponds, rivers and the sea. I record boiling and freezing water and rain on the roof.

It leaves me wanting more, but as the last track on the EP - I've run out of elements.

Track four of the EP The Elemental Concoction. This is probably the bravest track as it doesn't have any drum beat, nothing but the swaying rhythm from the roar of an open fire that morphs and pounds. It sounds like a harsh roasting and it shoots out sparks well. All together it has it's own beat with the timing of a flickering flame.

Like staring at a fire, I find this one quite hypnotising.

The good recordings were from the open fire and getting cracking and crackling sounds from burning leaves and twigs in the yard. I tried filling balloons with lighter gas and putting a flame to them, they were visual effective, but too much like the air sounds I had recorded.

A really interesting 20 minute piece by Muted Voices.

Drawing on the sounds you hear in daily life, & also the sounds you don't hear.

One half of the piece celebrates natural sounds, while the other celebrates sounds that have been manipulated. All worked together to create a surreal, strange, abstract but interesting journey.

My focus of my project has been an exploration of the relation between field recording practices/composition and contemporary political protest - specifically relating to the ongoing atrocities in Palestine.  My final piece incorporates field recordings made at three political demonstrations in Glasgow and Edinburgh in 2024.

My project incorporates a practice of listening to, recording and presenting of this field - outdoor urban spaces activated by momentary, communal political activity.  In contrast to this, I was also concerned with a field recording practice centred around the mechanical sounds of the private, domestic space - recorded in my rented flat in Glasgow.  These two contrasting practices are placed in diametrical opposition within the piece and their jostling for the listener’s attention and very different treatment (in terms of sonic intervention) form a structural framework for the piece.

An absolutely key contextual touchstone for my work was Christopher DeLaurenti’s PhD thesis: ‘Activist Sound: Field Recording, Phonography, and Soundscapes of Protest’ (DeLaurenti, 2020) as well as their extensive compositional work in this realm - particularly N30: Live at the WTO Protest, November 30, 1999 (DeLaurenti, 2000).  

DeLaurenti’s tracing of some of the key works involving field recording and political protest led me to the pieces that formed some of the most crucial foundations of my contextual listening (DeLaurenti, 2020. p104):

Wie klingt Münster? Die partizipative Klanginstallation „everyday sounds“ lädt vom 19. April bis 12. Mai 2024 dazu ein, die unverwechselbaren, alltäglichen Klänge Münsters auf neue Weise zu erleben. Auf Einladung des städtischen Kulturamtes haben die Klang- und Medienkünstlerin Anja Kreysing, die Literaturwissenschaftlerin Prof. Dr. Britta Herrmann und eine Gruppe Studierender das Klangbild Münsters erforscht. Nun präsentieren sie die Ergebnisse in einer Klanginstallation im Haus der Niederlande im Krameramtshaus. Der Workshop und die Klanginstallation sind Teil der Veranstaltungsreihe POETRY, die vom 8. April bis 12. Mai 2024 im Vorfeld des Lyriktreffens Münster (10. bis 13. Mai) stattfindet.
