Every summer, for 3 days along the verdant slopes of Grandfather Mountain, the Games are held. What Games? Well, from the moment you park to the moment you depart, there is no mistaking where you are and where you have just been. For the bagpipes, they do declare. It is a consistent and murmuring timbre that pervades the totality of the Games. The rolling grounds around MacRae Meadows are a picturesque locale for the cultural festivities, attire, decorations, and scents that all blend together to make the Highland Games what they are. But even in such a naturally abundant soundscape, the bagpipes reign above all other sounds, bringing the entire festival together over their collective chorus. Athletic feats take center stage, supported and cheered on by jovial and jubilant patrons that blanket the surrounding hillsides. The heaving and throwing of heavy objects demands a steady flow of grunts, screams, and shouts from contenders that are vying for the top spots in each event, but whom spend their next breath congratulating and joking with one another throughout the competition. Incredible music is performed and revered (including a spectacular Mod, traditional Gaelic singing competition), language is taught with sincerity and passion, food is served to feed the throngs of visitors, gifts are purchased and traded. Yet, much like the ubiquitous bagpiping, a display and constant conversation of cultural heritage is woven throughout the many activities of the Games. An unbroken ring of Scottish clans, family tents representing a dizzying range of the Highland Scottish peoples, twice encircle the outer track around the Meadows. This circuit provides a wealth of knowledge and insight into the histories and journeys of all of these clans, from where they hail, and how they endeavor today. And amidst those stories, one thing is so very clear: from one highland to another, the welcoming exuberance of the Scottish ethos continues.

Racing down a mountain slope, basking in the windwash and breathing deep the cool, crisp mountain air. Veering left and lunging right, rushing the turns and whooshing past the nearby trees. If all of that brings to mind the speed and excitement of zipping down powdery ski slopes, you could be kindly forgiven. This, is a coaster. Though not the kind you'll find stuffed into a teeming theme park. Rather, an alpine coaster, surrounded by nature and riding atop your own solo sled, controlling the entire exhilarating experience yourself. The bursts of speed, sweeping wind, and undulating track triggers an adrenaline surge that pairs brilliantly with the wide-open forest air. One can't help but smile, laugh, shout, holler, and even scream with satisfaction. It's simply a different experience from any other coaster you've ridden. Being built upon such a dynamic natural space, the changing of the seasons bring their own scents, sights, comforts, and sounds making it almost mandatory that you ride the coaster at different times of the year to get the complete experience. The team at Wilderness Run endeavors to keep the coaster cruising along through almost any weather. Hot or cold, wind, rain, or snow...unless there is lightening, you can bet there is a sled ready and waiting for you. In the sled house as you wait your turn to ride, the engaging and disengaging of brakes and rollers on the tubular track ricochet through the open-ended house as sleds arrive to the right and depart on the left. The snaps and clicks of harnesses are quickly overtaken by the catch and churn of the chain lift as it pulls the sleds steadily up incredibly long hill track. With the quiet occasional roar of the nearby mountain roads pass behind you, anticipation builds with each latch-like clink of the chain's draw. As you finally arrive at the peak, a friendly voice tells you to push forward to release the brake, and in a few seconds, you're off. For the next 3-5 minutes, you control the speed and making the trip back down to the sled house anything from a leisurely glide to a bleary-eyed sprint. But no matter how fast you go, it's always a wild ride.

Booming cannons and the crackling fire of countless rifles resonant across open pasture, bounding off the surrounding tree lines and with viscerality, claiming the attention of the thousands of patrons in attendance. Guided by the extensive knowledge and insight of an eminent Civil War historian, the reenactment of the Battle of Bentonville commences pensive fanfare. Over the course of two brisk spring afternoons, the battles of the 'Last Grand Charge of the Army of Tennessee', 'Fight for the Morris Farm', and 'Mower's Charge' all play out in rich, theatrical detail. The breadth and scope of the battles across the rolling Mill Creek Church Rd fields makes it nearly impossible to capture all of the action from a single vantage point. Yet the sounds of the battles flow over and follow the terrain, giving the many rows of sitting and standing guests a vivid sonic picture of each and every military function and operation. Commands and bugle horns cut through the gunwork while infantry and Calvary from both sides surge and storm over the grassy underfoot. At the height of the action, the constant barrage of rifle and cannon volley is nearly unbroken as the Union and Confederate armies wear and pound on one another, lessening their numbers minute by minute. The dedication and commitment by the actors both on the field of battle and within the encampments is a sight to behold. Uniforms are trimmed and accurately defined with era-appropriate designs, tools, and supplies. As you watch and listen, slowly getting further and further drawn into the fray, the narration subsides for a bit and the audience almost begins to seem out of place. After the battles are complete, the armies fall into formation and each performs their march from the field and back to their respective camps. The entire spectacle is incredible to take in, especially the unavoidably bombastic acoustics that permeate every square foot of the land, and the imagination. History is brought to life here, in a way that impacts and holds in the hearts of any who venture out to witness the Battle of Bentonville in its full, enveloping glory.
