Stella Standingbear is a musician from Salt Lake City, UT. She currently resides on the Pine Ridge Reservation. Her music is melodic rap that gives an uplifting message. In honor of MMIW and Native American Heritage Month 2022, Stella released her debut single, Home Runs. Next, the Lakota Star made her debut performance on Fox13 News Utah. The future is bright with co-signs, interviews, radio plays, major festivals, and arena bookings. On March 23rd, 2023, the Still Standing EP was released. Stella talks about her experience with generational trauma, mental health, and life challenges with an optimistic outlook. ICT newscast headlines for today:
A bipartisan firearm bill introduced in the House would expand I.D. requirements for gun purchases, if passed into law. Sponsored by Rep. Dusty Johnson, R-South Dakota and Rep. Mary Sattler Peltola, D-Alaska, the bill would permit Tribal I.D. to be used for firearm purchases.

Indigenous-led clean energy projects in Canada are proving to be important in reaching the country’s future goals. First Nations now own, co-own, or have defined financial agreements for almost 20 percent of the country’s electricity production.

A 2020 report by the Indigenous Clean Energy Social Enterprise identified 197 renewable energy projects with Native involvement. The Canadian government is setting goals to achieve net-zero for its electricity grid as early as 2035 and net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050.

The Navajo Nation is mourning the loss of another leader. The Nation’s former President Ben Shelly died last week at age 75. Shelly was elected in 2011, and served one term as vice president in 2007. Shelly’s passing comes just weeks after the loss of former President Peterson Zah.

President Joe Biden officially declared Avi Kwa Ame as a national monument, March 21. The designation of the southern Nevada site came as a major celebration to the tribes who hold that land with significance.
In Fort Hall, Idaho, there’s a new venture aiming to feed the community and bring joy. The Turquoise is a new food truck owned by Indigenous entrepreneurs Sonia Lavatta and Anthony Rivera. The trailer used to be their home for two years before they were able to find affordable housing for their three children.

ICT newscast headlines for today:

Indigenous leaders are setting priorities for this year’s farm bill. At a U.S. Senate hearing last week they lobbied for expanding tribal jurisdiction over programs at the Department of Agriculture. Senator Brian Schatz of Hawai’i says that the 2018 farm bill was the first where Native communities had a “meaningful seat at the table.”

The Indian Gaming Association’s annual conference kicked off Monday in San Diego, California. ICT’s Quindrea Yazzie has this report.

Traction is gaining on a Canadian license plate aimed at bringing awareness to the crisis of missing and murdered Indigenous relatives. It’s estimated as many as 4,000 Indigenous women and girls have been killed in Canada in the past 30 years. Lawmakers have created a specialty license plate to raise funds for their families. 

In Australia, the National Indigenous Space Academy is inspiring hope for the country’s first Indigenous astronaut. The initiative is a pathway for Indigenous students studying STEM to participate in programs at NASA.

ICT newscast headlines for today:

A member of the Blackfeet Nation Business Council has resigned. Tim Davis resigned last week after the council charged him with three counts of misconduct, according to reporting by the Missoulian. The council will hold a special election for Davis’ seat on April 25.

The United States Postal Service is reaching Native communities through a new initiative. ICT’s Pacey Smith-Garcia has the story.

A proposed bill in the state of Illinois is aiming to teach Native American history in schools. The legislation passed the state House last week and was introduced by state Rep. Maurice West. If passed into law, it would create the Native American Curriculum Task Force which will help shape what school boards adopt into their local lesson plans.

The first accredited doctoral program has just been launched from a tribal college or university. Navajo Technical University is the first among more than 30 accredited tribal colleges and universities across the country to offer this high level degree.
