Telinga Modular mono recording with Sennheiser MKH8040

...5:37 AM... waking up in partial darkness, but in total solitude. Tide was low. Coffee was brewing, so I had time to place Zoom on a feature of rock just above the water line. Coffee poured. Back in the tent... but more importantly back in the warm sleeping bag so I could listen to the low hum and big rumble of the sea.

I've been hoping to capture a recording of a Dipper singing for a while, but I've always put it off as my local river is quite urban and the only section that it isn't, is a popular park and even then the best section for Dipper comes in close proximity to a busy School, but this morning I lead a walk around the park and on the walk we had some fantastic singing Dipper encounters, so I returned shortly after the walk with my dish in the hope to capture some. I didn't get the same experience as we did in the morning but it was still great to get some small bursts of song from this individual. Dippers are a semi-aquatic birds, so they are quite difficult to record singing over the sound of the noisy river and this guy decided his singing spot was right next to a waterfall, but I hung around in the hope it would move away and despite still being in range of the waterfall, the Parabolic Dish and Schoeps CCM 4 did a great job at rejecting that sound. 

A note here, I must stress that in my previous experiences with Omni's inside a dish, due to the typical way that omni's capture the signal twice, once from behind the capsule and then second from within the focal point, this would create some cone-filtering, which is fine in most scenarios in nature as the subject is never usually loud enough to create an issue, but when around loud sources such as water, I've had unpleasing results. Using this CCM 4 however is a game changer around rivers and streams and the transition from on-axis to off-axis loud water is so smooth, other than the volume difference of the amplified sound, the transition is really pleasing, meaning you could using it much how you would a shotgun mic.
