A short representative sample of Wood Duck recordings. Wood Ducks, Aix sponsa, are common ducks of swamps, marshes, and other riparian habitats in North America. Being the only duck to nest in tree cavities, they depends on the holes drilled by Pileated Woodpeckers, linking the survival of the woodpecker to the success of the duck to best and breed.
Noisy and loud, females have multiple calls but their signature all-purpose contact call  "ooo-eek" is the most familiar, and once heard it's hard to forget..
These birds are low-flyers and often the last to return home at dusk after a day of dispersed foraging. I've been in swamps where it seemed like I was being buzzed by an endless stream of screeching Wood Ducks, flying by mere feet above my head.

Each recording here is in two parts -- the first is isolated, clean, and ready for implementation in a media project. The latter half is the sound in its musty, noisy original state.

Wood Ducks move around and do not call continuously. Calls are collected and strung together in order-of-occurrence, grouped by individual, then by like-type.

I don't take moments like this for granted these days, knowing how fast this species has declined in the Uk, this might even be the last time I see a pair holding a territory like this, which makes it even more of a magical recording for me. It's a simple song, but they are capable of a complex variety of different calls and song types, some of which you hear as the pair interact with each other before the male put on a good show for her.

Redpoll not doing so great in my area and overall in Wales I believe there are downwards trends so was happy to stumble across a small flock of around 10-15 that were drinking from an upland stream, along with larger flock of Siskin and Goldfinch, so it was quite noisy at the well.

Always nice to confirm a breeding pair as you're never too certain till you find a nest but these guys are hanging on in the same spot over the span of a few weeks now so pretty certain they're settled in.

First time recording this species staying still for a change! they usually see me coming and dart off back down stream but this guy was too occupied in luring in a female.

This piece has a very different tone and feel than Sound Rinse No. 3, but it was inspired by the same audio recording the percussionist Brian Rice made of an amazing, polytonal and polyrhythmic cascade of rainwater falling through the downspout visible this photograph. An uncut copy of that recording is the backbone of the piece, to which Jon added electric organ chords and a copy (at the beginning and end) of a 7 second clip from Brian's recording. / / / Like other Sound Rinse Suite selections, “Kinda Kabukiish" combines what we commonly refer to as "musical instruments" and "natural" environmental sounds. Hopefully, this series can illustrate how, in the larger scheme of things, sound itself is a "natural" phenomenon, regardless of how we characterize its source.

Great reed warbler - dawn chorus on the wetland

I've always struggled to get a good recording of these guys as the dynamic range between the subtle percussion and their loud piercing trills is quite large. The best recordings I've heard of these have actually been close up microphones, which I hope to try one day but for now, this is about as good as I've managed to get so far. Only a few mimicry phrases I can pick up in this one, the most obvious being that Jackdaw but lots of Gull sounds in there too.
