Uga is a beautiful town in the Igbo speaking area of Nigeria. The town's origins are associated with the picking of African oil palm fruit. So, the phrase UGA NTUTU AKWU - (Uga picking African oil palm fruit) highlights this association. This track is about the wooden slit gong of Uga (IKORO UGA). Many Igbo towns have IKORO, a gigantic wooden slit gong played only during special occasions (as an indigenous radio broadcast) to bring the people of a town together to listen to a very important message. The IKORO is usually strategically placed at a location that will aid the hearing of the sound of the IKORO from all parts of a town. Uga, had its own IKORO until 2015 when a non-Uga person who identifies as a Christian burnt it on religious grounds. This music sings about that incident and creates awareness of that act of vandalism. This is part of our Theatre Of Conversation discussions. Join our conversation and share your views.
