Short description of the work

The compositions I know by Éliane Radigue resemble a stream of sounds—a single, long, flowing, wide-ranging tone that constantly changes and shifts in different “colours”. In one composition I heard, this stream of sound moved very slowly, almost imperceptibly, from the back left to the front right—diagonally.

Several years ago, I attended a workshop given by Éliane Radigue in Berlin and became acquainted with her work with synthesizers.

When I began working on my piece Flow, I intended to create a composition of this kind and mainly developed sounds that seem like long sustained tones. I arranged these so that several sound simultaneously or overlap. To make this stream of sound more interesting and varied, I interspersed a few shorter sounds here and there. In some places, you can also hear human breathing or hissing noises.

Die Kompositionen, die ich von Éliane Radigue kenne, gleichen einem Strom aus Klängen – wie ein einziger, lang gezogener, fließender, breit gefächerter Ton, der sich ständig verändert und in verschiedenen „Farben“ changiert. Bei einer Komposition, die ich gehört habe, bewegte sich dieser Klangstrom ganz langsam, kaum merklich von hinten links nach vorne rechts – diagonal.

Vor etlichen Jahren habe ich einen Workshop, den Éliane Radigue in Berlin gegeben hat, besucht und dabei ihre Arbeit mit Synthesizern kennen gelernt.

Als ich mit der Arbeit an meinem Stück „Flow“ begonnen habe, hatte ich vor, eine Komposition in dieser Art zu schaffen und habe hauptsächlich Klänge entwickelt, die wie lang ausgehaltene Töne wirken. Diese habe ich so angeordnet, dass mehrere gleichzeitig klingen oder sich überlappen. Um diesen Klangstrom interessanter und abwechslungsreicher zu gestalten, habe ich hier und da einige kürzere Klänge eingestreut. An einigen Stellen hört man auch menschliche Atem- oder Zischgeräusche.

**„Meerjungfrau“** ist ein kraftvoller Bigroom-Track, der mystische Ozean-Atmosphäre mit massiver Festival-Energie verbindet. Tief schwebende Pads und sphärische Vocal-Chops bauen eine geheimnisvolle Stimmung auf, bevor ein treibender Build-Up die Spannung bis zum Drop ins Unermessliche steigert.

Der Drop schlägt wie eine Welle ein: fette Kicks, aggressive Synth-Leads und ein hypnotisches Hauptmotiv, das die Magie und Stärke einer Meerjungfrau musikalisch widerspiegelt. Zwischen Dunkelheit und Euphorie entsteht ein Sound, der sowohl unter Wasser träumen lässt als auch auf der Mainstage explodiert.

Ein Track für große Momente, tanzende Massen und Nächte, in denen Bass und Fantasie miteinander verschmelzen.

This is the (slightly edited, for reduced noise floor, coughs, extra noises, and so on) live recording of the world premiere of lens / eye (slowly, in the depth. Misericordia). It took place in the course of last year's Festival Prix Annelie de Man in Amsterdam, at the Orgelpark, on November 23rd, 2025. The piece is actually for harpsichord and video projection, however, on Soundcloud, the visual part cannot be shown.

lens / eye employs a minimally prepared and somewhat detuned harpsichord, about one and a half octaves of the upper manual are tuned down about a quarter-tone (in this recording, the detuning is less than that because of the specifics of the instrument at hand), while in the bass register, some strings are prepared with a kind of aluminum foil.  The piece is on the one hand an investigation into intertwined and unfolding developments both of visual and musical material,and (further down that line) also into the immediacy of the process of assigning meaning to such developments. On the other hand, and in this, though, it seeks to create, and to return, some space and time for precisely these purposes. The formal and structural presettings remain integral to the piece and its perception, yet have become more of a structural background for the necessary and rare act of returning space to those in need—Misericordia.

The golden toad was a tiny brightly coloured toad – named after the typical brilliant orange colouring of the male. Their habitat was a very small area in Costa Rica’s Monteverde Cloud Forest (the “elfin forest” or mountain range Cordillera de Tilarán). They were first sighted in 1964. The last toad was sighted in 1989. The field biologist Marty Crump, in her book “In search of the golden frog” describes her first encounters with the golden toad in 1987 and their subsequent decline until May 1989, when her partner sighted the last male. She describes their “explosive” breeding habits. All females would lay their eggs during a short period of time. The males would seek out the females and pile themselves on top of them forming what herpetologist Jay Savage described in 1965 as “writhing masses of toad-balls”. Inspired by this behavior, I set out to create a musical composition that, instead of emulating the sound of the toads, emulated their intense, fierce, complex mating behavior. I used knot-theory to generate winding melodic contours and concurrent conflicting rhythmic and temporal streams. I molded the density of attacks after the number of sighted golden toads from 1964-1987- each year being ca.19 seconds – so the sprightly, lively musical textures experience a sudden decline in density towards the end of the piece.

Sibylle Pomorin (*1956) studied from 1975 until 1980 flute and saxophone at the Staatliche Hochschule für Musik in Münster, Germany. 

In 1984/85, she studied composition under Ernst Bechert in Hamburg, Germany and in 1994, she received composition lessons and an introduction to electroacoustic music from the American composer and electronic musician Alice Shields during a six-month stay in New York. 

Between 1982 and 1994 she toured with improvising musicians of the international scene and toured with her own groups and compositions through Europe and Israel. 

She received composition commissions for ensembles, festivals, broadcasting, and theatre as well as numerous prices and awards and was promoted by various working scholarships – inter alia in New York, Istanbul and Iceland. Scores publications and CD releases inter alia by Moers Music and in the Furore Verlag. 

Her music has been performed at international festivals for contemporary music in Europe, Israel, Mexico, Australia, Canada, Georgia, Japan and the USA.
