From a sound design perspective, this might be the most "accomplished" Interbay track, ever.  And, strangely, for the longest time...I wasn't entirely sure what to do with it.  

This has been sitting, unfinished, in The Vault for about a year.  It was meant to be part of the Facebook Experiments, until I made the choice to switch to posting tracks here on SoundCloud.  It was a gorgeous sounding, if a bit aimless, instrumental--which would have been fine as an "Experiment"--but I've made it a rule that the tracks I post here on SoundCloud must have a vocal component.  

I couldn't figure out how to do that, so it sat in the Vault.  

Until today--and I'm not entirely sure that the direction I took to get some vocals into this track is the best way to do this, though it feels thematic and I did try to create some song structure when I reopened the project file last night.  I also added a couple of new musical parts--the church choir sound, the individual flute section...  

BUT, the heart of what the instrumental version of this track remains intact--that post-punk mixture of guitars and thick and sharp chords...shimmering crystal echo'd synths over classic 808 drums.  

When I started this track, my temporary save file title was simply "Project 4," it really was just a "start a new project and see where it takes you."  When I started piecing elements together--nearly every thing you hear is written or played by me...not the vocals and not the choir, but other than that, there are no other samples used in this track--I noted the "denseness" of the sound I was creating--it was like running into a brick wall, I thought.  But, I also thought it had a vibe of darkly divine miracle--glorious, but also terrifying.  

...and thus, "Wall of Cathedrals" (which is a reference to Phil Spector's "Wall of Sound.")  

Last night, trying to think of what "Wall of Cathedrals" could possibly "mean"--I imagined a fantasy world--Middle Earth, Narnia, Westeros--where the only path through a valley is blocked by an entire wall of gigantic cathedrals, with no obbvious path through to continue on...

But that mental image didn't loan itself terribly well to the task of writing song lyrics.  

And that's where my thinking made a turn--and please know, this is one possible interpretation...I wasn't trying to make a statement here...i just wanted some words to go with this music.  

I combined some of my thinking about the growth of human knowledge, the idea that we tend to attribute unexplainable things to supernatural forces until we understand the "logical explanation" for what we hadn't truly understood...with the idea that sometimes, the structure of religion is more about sustaining itself rather than exploring the relationship between those who believe and what they believe in...  

...in other words, the "path forward" could seem to be blocked by a "wall of cathedrals."  

Does it make sense?  I don't kinow.  I have no answers when it comes to this stuff.  (Grew up Catholic, but that was a long time ago.)  Does the inclusion of these spoken word parts help the song?  Again, I don't know.  I do know that the words allow me to post this here, today, as the latest Interbay SoundCloud Exclusive.
