■ Purpose: a person’s memories are witnessed, isolated, and analyzed. A story is woven, tapestries as rich or as filled with holes as the narrative is spun. But even if the finest materials are selected and compiled, worked and reworked, presented and garnished…at its very core, it will never, ever be the original memory.

The original memories—those minutes and seconds belonging to no one but the ones who lived them—are etched upon the soul, far from the reach of any who would dare seek to replicate their sequence.

Black Box

■ Purpose: blame-shifting, guilt tripping, victim’s mentality, gaslighting, all of it is hideous, insidious, yet vehemently corrosive. Witchcraft, in essence, is any instance in which a human being attempts to subvert the free will of another. It’s a direct act of rebellion born of prideful ignorance, but what practitioners often fail to correlate is that it also hastens the deterioration of their own flesh. It precipitates illness, expedites the death of one caught in it once the unseen powers they’re messing with deem them useless.

It can’t save, can’t set free, can’t heal, can’t grant eyes that truly see, ears that truly hear, a heart capable of understanding that’s been transformed from stone to flesh, receptive to adding understanding to wisdom to knowledge.

How I can tell you this? Because we were once caught in it. Myself, through running to the very source of my helplessness, mistaking repulsive, fallen creatures for angels of pure light. Nines, through growing up in the midst of the abomination that is Catholicism, an amalgamation of haphazardly chopped and glued systems, all of which bring only religious arrogance and/or deeper despair.

Christ alone could heal my body of illnesses doctors couldn’t see. Christ alone could heal my heart of wounds bleeding since childhood. Christ alone could remove the stains, chains, and destruction wrought by my misguided attempts at granting myself what mankind has no means to give.

And we proclaim this unashamedly. Because not once in the rags of our own disrepair was He ashamed to proclaim His own love for us.

■ Purpose: a surprise for a certain precious Scanner. The occasion? Gratitude for your existence. What reason more does one require?

■ Thoughts: I tried something a little different in the percussion department. I had a thought as I was deciding on vocals, “What if, just as He taught Her to access countless memories, 9S helped 2B gain the capability of backing up memory data as well (to an agreed upon point besides the Bunker, of course)?”

I can see the two of them trying to ensure their ability help one another by any means. That’s just the kind of bond they share, a kind of love this world has long forgotten.
