There is a traditional custom in a sleepy Devonshire town called Ottery St Mary. Every Bonfire night, the old barrels are gathered and lined with Tar. Then those barrels are lit up, and Men run through the streets of Ottery until the Barrels are burnt out. By morning, the town returns to normal. 

I grew up in Devon and have been to Tar Barrels on numerous occasions. So, I decided to write a song about this unique and frankly bizarre medieval tradition dating back to 1605.
