At Grandma One's house, we run and play
Under apple trees all day
Sunshine dancing on the lawn
Laughter echoes until dawn
Skip and jump and climb so high
Picking apples from July

At Grandma Two's house, we sit up straight
Dark wood furniture we hate
Sacred Heart with eyes that follow
Holy water, hard to swallow
Tick-tock-tick the mantle clock
Rosary beads, we dare not mock

At Grandma One's house, cookies bake
Sticky fingers, chocolate cake
Rolling in the grass so green
Happiest place we've ever seen
Butterflies and buzzing bees
Summer lasts eternally

At Grandma Two's house, curtains drawn
Candles flicker, light withdrawn
Crucifixes on the wall
Statues standing in the hall
Whispered prayers on wooden beads
"Sit still, child, and hush your needs"

But wait, now that I think it through
Something strange but somehow true
Same address on both the doors
Same old creaky wooden floors

Hello, I’m Jaylee, founding curator of the Skyseed Community, mother of two sensitive and resilient grown children, poetess of fairytale and rhyme, and a retired early years mentor who has carried her childhood dreams into living maturity.
