Clarity

"Clarity" is a deeply personal release from Philia, a track born from a moment of bittersweet significance. It began with a simple, unassuming sample: Philia’s friend Micah (aka Quotes from Movies) improvising during their last hangout before Micah moved to Nashville. That fleeting memory evolved into something more—an exploration of emotion through sound, where joy and nostalgia intertwine. 

Crafted primarily with analog synthesizers, "Clarity" presented Philia with both a technical challenge and an emotional journey. Its dual nature allows it to exist as a dance track while simultaneously capturing the quieter, reflective tones of somberness and longing. At its heart lies a poignant refrain: “I got you,” a tender nod to the enduring warmth of past relationships and the memories that linger, even as life moves forward. Initially, "Clarity" was set aside—a private piece too personal to share. But a chance moment of connection changed everything. 

After posting another track to Odesza’s subreddit, Philia caught the attention of Portyl, an artist who reached out with genuine interest. Reluctantly, Philia included "Clarity" in a demo package, unsure if it would resonate. 

Within 24 hours of receiving the demo, Portyl delicately weaved new sounds and elements into the demo’s foundation, seamlessly setting the tone of the final vision. The focus on a catchy vocal chop and dreamy melody became the heartbeat for the track, both which are present nearly the entire duration. The abundance of texture and details ties the track together with nothing short of nostalgic feelings. 
The result leads the listener down a road of personal interpretation; both intimate and expansive, somber yet uplifting.  
After just merely a week of collaboration, Clarity officially had its name and final export. 

"Clarity" stands as a testament to the beauty of vulnerability, a celebration of memory, and the power of collaboration to create something truly lasting.

To feel Philia is to experience a fondness, especially an abnormal love for a specific thing. For Wisconsin based producer, vocalist and artist Nathan Blanck, this is at the core of what it means to make music for him as well as how he hopes those listening to him will feel. For Nathan, Philia represents the love we can experience through sound, and the joy of existing in communities that share music. The idea that music can bring people together, it can save people. Philias music isn’t only made for instant gratification, it’s also made to be listened to years later, provoke and cherish those memories that created who we are.   

Blanck’s early musical influences, singing in church and various vocal ensembles, were defined by community and the sharing of songs. He is a self-taught producer and avid explorer of all musical genres. Discovering electronic music through artists such as Flume, Odesza, and Aphex Twin, Nathan felt distinctively drawn to the genre as it challenged much of his classical upbringing and offered a space free of boundaries and ripe for experimentation. With his focus on granulated distorted dissonance, airy vocals, and lush large synths, Philia’s music is sure to invoke inner wandering. While also producing serotonin filled thoughts and friendly environments for all to listen to together.

The essence of his artist project Philia, is not just that of pushing musical boundaries but also of understanding sound and production at its core. Philia is making a name for himself by combining the world of electronic unpredictability with comforting resolutions that will keep you guessing what’s next.
