Gladstone Deluxe is one of the most exciting musicians in the US right now. They make futuristic, deep, percussive yet smooth techno, deep house and electro. They also play timbales in NYC queer and trans salsa band Las Mariquitas, and are a frequent collaborator with fellow East Coast sonic trailblazers Kiernan Laveaux, Johnny Zoloft, and Mira Mira. They have released on Black Techno Matters, Data Disk, Misc, Innocent Music, How Things Are Made, and now Fixed Rhythms is excited to add to the Gladstone lore with their new offering, “No Haterade EP”.

For episode 63, I am very excited and honored to have a special mix by Oklahoma City major head Stin from @chatpile . This is just over an hour of a musical history of all shades of underground freak rock/punk/metal from Oklahoma City. Beginning in the 70s and ending with our current moment. As someone who stepped into this chronology as a fan and fellow noise-maker in the late 00s/early 10s, I personally found it invigorating to understand on a deeper sonic level where the sounds were coming from that we were all making. Today you will hear people talk about the loss of regional sound identities, but I’m hoping that the act of drawing from the ghosts of your local alternative spheres has not completely died out. After listening to the mix, it seems like those connections you find with the roots of a scene happen in many different ways and are often unconscious. For example, playing in bands with people slightly older than you, finding the same records at the local shops, attending gigs together and soaking up the same influences. There are bands, people, and labels mentioned in here that make up the core of my music-loving DNA. There were so many older freaks who were taking care of me as a teenager while I was out on a school night at The Conservatory (legendary OKC venue) catching music from around the world at wildly cheap door costs. And then I imagine that happening to those who were older than me when they were kids…a beautiful freaky cycle. 

I can’t mention enough how much Stin is a pillar of our local music scene in OKC. He ran a tape label called Nerd Party, which he mentions. @dusthousestudio is where I and so many people in the City recorded our records (Chat Pile still records there!). I wouldn’t have seen so many awesome bands that came through OKC in the 00s and 10s, if it weren’t for Stin and his friends nudging me to go. The Speed Falkon tape that he put out (he plays a track off of it) is one of my all-time favorite OKC underground installments. I played that tape OUT. And I just checked…it’s not even listed on Discogs. There are some real delights here that you won’t hear outside of Stin’s bedroom. Truly honored to have him open up his media collection to us with this Okie curatorial lens and for the bits and bobs shared in between the music. I hope you enjoy, and since he says he’s down, we will definitely be inviting him for another episode of specialties. For Marcela Dias Sindaco’s third release on the Oklahoma City label Fixed Rhythms, she delivers a full-length 2xLP of her characteristically magical electro. These songs were recorded in various studios across Brazil, capturing the intangibles of Brazilian city life. You can hear her influences (Detroit techno, kosmische synth travel, electro, etc.), but she distills it all yet again into something completely her own. Whenever you listen to her music, you know it’s her. Hypnotizing electro made on warm machines with her sung/spoken Portuguese woven enchantedly throughout…truly sublime listening. This is a 16 track groove journey that will make you a Marcela fan if you aren’t already one.

The two black 12”s come housed in a beautiful jacket that offers you a glimpse into Marcela’s world. The background of the artwork on the backside features a wallpaper design that you may find in an old home in Brazil. Inside is an insert written by Italian curator and philosopher Massimo Torrigiani. Only 300 copies pressed…don’t sleep on this one.
