In this next installment of Token, Brussels’ own Border One steps in to showcase ‘Echoes from the Abyss’, another swinging, modular-driven project destined for controlled sound systems. In these four tracks, the seasoned producer does what he knows best: engaging the dancefloor through his signature sound design and use of space. 

‘Echoes from the Abyss’ the track, like the EP, is a collection of sound associations that are synonymous with Border One’s sound. Resonant and cerebral yet bouncy and full of groove, the A1 presents a shimmering veil of synthwork that gives off a truly hypnotic effect. The follow up is much more sequence-based, focusing on the elements’ interactions. The producer plays along freely with his drum machine, responding to a classically loopy and dissonant main synth that insists its way from beginning to end. Tension is everything, especially when met with a sustained chord in the second half, turning the record into a weapon of suspense. ‘Celestial Observer’ comes back straight and center with a focused tone and a progressive arrangement. With a thick low end and shrill highs, Border One flicks through percussion patterns and filter sweeps to make an intense, at times close eyed dancefloor experience. Ducking back into obscurity for the last track, ‘Escaping the Void’ takes on a more minimally produced style that breathes a bit after its previous, denser productions. Concluding with a question mark is always very appropriate, and here we’re faced with a record caught between ethereal soundscapes and tense implications. With ‘Escaping the Void’, Border One closes with his latest contribution to Token with class as always, appealing to genre veterans and newcomers alike.

All of my music has at least three layers. One is the sonic reference, which is where the musical influence of the music came from. The second is the muse. And the third is the emotional layer. The third is the deepest element here.

The sonic reference was me trying to make an album, in the style of what Neil Young did on 1995 acid western film, Dead Man, starring Johnny Depp.

The muse for this album was all a jumble of all films I had seen by film Quentin Tarantino. So, I was aiming for the sound of the Dead Man soundtrack, set to a hypothetical film by Tarantino, and I called it The Reckoning.

Why? Because as dark as all Tarantino’s films are, the characters have their reckoning in the end. I really liked that.

The emotional element, the third, was I had recently gone through a significant relationship breakdown. I soon lost my job and soon ended up homeless. Things got so bad I ended up in a psych ward for three months. I was in a very dark place. Then the city I lived in was hit by a devastating flood.

So maybe my city, like the characters in Tarantino’s films, was too having its own reckoning. My emotional state was certainly going through a reset and reckoning. A breakdown for a breakthrough.

Whilst in hospital, I cycled through maybe half a dozen serious medications before we found some that could save me from checking-out. This process was hard and at times, I was hallucinating and struggling to keep a grip on reality.

Eventually after being in hospital for about 2 months, I was allowed part day leave. I didn’t have a car, or a partner. So, I would just walk to the park next door to the hospital, which was large, dense and private. I sat myself down on the grass, alone, and away people. And I started to strum and write. Pond and Lake came out of that period.

After about three months, I eventually was released from hospital. I moved into a share house, and had a private one bedroom, self-contained flat. I was living underneath the couple who owned the house above me.

I was dirt poor, and it was really hard time. I had two young kids as well, and I tried to remain brave for them. There was a lot of guilt as a parent for putting them in this situation. Luckily it was shared custody, and they still had their mother, and childhood home to go back to, after what would have felt camping for a week, in my small place.

But I did have a portable, digital 8 track recorder, an old Roland keyboard, about three guitars. I was off work for maybe 18 months all up months then and spent at least a year of that writing time and recording The Reckoning.

In the depths of depression and deep poverty, these songs came to me as gifts from above. The album literally and figuratively saved my life. It was the accumulation of two years, from the relationship breakdown, homelessness, my stay in hospital, long term unemployment, to eventually returning to the outside world.

I had never produced music before and was working with very basic gear. But I did what we all do at any time, which is to work with what we have.

This story, the full story behind this album, has never been shared, beyond my friends until today, July 13, 2025, fourteen years after these events began.

A contribution to International Day of Yoga adopted by the United Nations in 2014 and celebrated across the world every year on 21st June.
 
Often thought of, particularly in the West, as the practice of physical exercises or Asanas, including systems of breathing, the word ‘yoga’ derives from the Sanskrit and means to join or unite, symbolising the union of body, consciousness and the Divine.
 
Our speaker this evening will explore the relationship and connections between Hatha Yoga in its various forms and levels and Raja Yoga as taught and practised by the Brahma Kumaris.
 
Speaker: Bhavesh Ramji 
Bhavesh came to the practice of Raja Yoga meditation at a young age as his parents were regular attendees of the Brahma Kumaris Centre in Leicester.  In 2016, he decided to become a Hatha Yoga teacher and trained in Rishikesh, India, making multiple visits to complete his training.  He has been teaching Hatha Yoga professionally since 2018.  Inspired by his joint yoga practice, Bhavesh enjoys writing poetry and has published a series of three books in 2023, entitled 'Oceans of Love'.

Brisbane-based Paul J Rogers grew up in the south-eastern suburbs of Sydney in the 1980’s, in a place affectionately known as ‘The Shire’ (post LoTR).    

Paul started playing guitar and writing music at age 14. His sound was influenced by the rock politics of Midnight Oil, the infectious grooves of INXS, and the atmospheric landscapes of U2.    

Paul experienced degrees of success with Real Life Exit (RLX) in the early 1990’s playing prestigious venues such as Lee's Palace (Toronto), as well as Selina’s at Sydney’s Coogee Bay Hotel. In this period RLX were signed with Sony aﬃliate ICM (International Creative Management - now CAA).    

He then withdrew from the lights to start a family in the early 2000’s.  In 2003 his passion for global themes of human rights, justice, power and citizenship saw him begin a degree in Political Science & International Studies.  He graduated in 2009.   

From 1998 to 2012 Paul was  actively engaged as a volunteer in several community and environmental projects and not-for-profit organizations. 

Coming out of musical hibernation in 2014, Paul began producing and releasing music as a solo artist. He has now released 40  songs. 

Paul writes, performs and produces all of his music.    

Outside of music, Paul spends his downtime engaged in all things, Science, Spirit, and Space.

Established in 2008, Cogo stands for quality event management organisation with focus in innovative techno music.

From 2020 Cogo also runs as a vinyl and digital imprint.
