What goes through my mind whenever I play the lovely tune Midnight on the Water? It's a romantic rendezvous of man and woman dancing in the moonlight as the water swirls around their legs and illuminates their silhouettes. I am playing the tune on my accordion with my husband playing rhythm guitar and bass guitar, to create the background music for this fantasy video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6yISMOEvYTI  

Ever since Tom and I first heard this lovely Texas waltz, Midnight on the Water, on a David Bromberg album, we have loved this tune. So, it was one of the first tunes I learned when I picked up playing the accordion. And playing Midnight on the Water always evokes the same romance for me.

We have played Midnight on the Water for many performances and dances, and with many musician friends over the years. It's especially nice to play for the waltz selection of a dance. Thank you for enjoying this little vignette. -- Mary Kay Aufrance

About Midnight on the Water:
Genres: Folk Music, American Traditional Music

Midnight on the Water is a popular melody that's usually credited to Texas fiddler Luke Thomasson, although it has been published by his son Benny, who lore says heard his father and uncle playing the tune on the family porch around 1900. Also, many music historians have noted this tune is quite similar to a n old Oklahoma tune called "Old Paint," and there is an ongoing debate about whether "Midnight" is derivative of "Paint" (or the other way around). The Library of Congress recording "Cowboy Songs, Ballads, and Cattle Calls from Texas" (LOC lp L28), collected by John A. Lomax, includes a version of the "Paint" song, and it is a very similar melody to "Midnight on the Water."

Enjoy our heartfelt instrumental version of Home on the Range. Enjoy the accordion and guitar duet by Tom and Mary Kay Aufrance. Home on the Range is an American folk song and it is often called the anthem of the American West. Home on the Range became the Kansas state song, and the Western Writers of America chose it as one of the Top 100 western songs of all time. We have been playing and singing Home on the Range for audiences for a number of years, and it's always a favorite singalong and dance tune.

A cover of the Grateful Dead classic "Friend of the Devil" with Amy on lead vocal and her son Jonah on lead guitar. I sang a bit and added mandolin.

I tried an acoustic version of "Summertime". The arrangement I followed is Doc Watson's, also recently done to beautiful effect by Billy Strings and Marcus King. I had a summer head cold, which affected my vocal tone a bit.

First attempt at the bluegrass/oldtime classic, "Man of Constant Sorrow". WT on cajon. WT and I were banished to the rooftop due to a house full of covid limiting the ability to play inside. I dragged a microphone up there. Despite the NYC city noise, it was a cool place to record.

Die Laid Back Jazz Band stellt sich vor:
In einem Borgholzhausener Wohnzimmer noch ohne Bandnamen gegründet, aber bereits viele Jahre zuvor geplant und geträumt – und letztendlich 2016 ins Leben gerufen!
That’s Jazz! Der Gründer der Combo, Michael Grammel, hörte bereits als junger Mann den Jazz „der guten alten Zeit“. Vor allem die Anfänge des Jazz im frühen 20. Jahrhunderts sollten in einer Jazzbandgründung endlich ihren Anfang finden. Träume sollten endlich wahr werden.
So kamen nach und nach akustische Instrumente dazu und gaben und geben Old Time Jazz, Hot Jazz, sowie Swing und leichte „Ausflüchte“ in andere Richtungen durch die individuelle Interpretation der Musiker eine wunderbare Eigenständigkeit.
Viele der gespielten Klassiker sind bekannt. Aber auch zahlreiche „Schätze“ der 1920er bis 1940er Jahre, die den Schwerpunkt des Repertoires bilden, spielt die Laid Back Jazz Band für Sie.
Und, wie Sie es wünschen, vom Duo bis zur mini Bigband.
„Laid Back“ heißt so viel wie zurücklehnen, entspannen. Aber auch tanzbare Stücke sind natürlich mit dabei.
