After I really got into my DJing — and once I started, I couldn’t stop — I landed a residency at Club A in Mexico. The crew back then was just Alex, Fumi, and myself.

At the time, my dad was the vice president of the NHSCCA — the National High School Car Club Association. His office was the official clubhouse and headquarters. The NHSCCA’s whole mission was to stop illegal street racing in San Diego by giving kids a safe place to race. They used to hold free drag-racing nights at Qualcomm Stadium so people could come watch and racers could run legally instead of tearing up the streets.

Every Friday we’d head down to Club A to DJ. It was five bucks, all you could drink, all night long. Three floors, packed, wild every weekend. They even had an ass contest — that’s the kind of chaos it was.

On Saturdays, I’d grab the keys to my dad’s NHSCCA office. Since it doubled as the clubhouse and was always open, we’d throw parties there. A couple times we brought jugs back from Mexico and slammed them down on top of the president’s desk while he had no idea.

There was this dude in the back named Mother Mike who basically lived there. He acted like he was the president, Alan Sill. He didn’t talk to the president — he pretended to be the president. He’d throw huge parties, dance around, make announcements, everything.

One night, I’m sitting out front watching for cops. A patrol car rolls up slow. The officer pauses, sniffs the air, and goes,
“I’m not gonna be able to get in there, am I?”
I said, “No, sir.”

He looks at us and says,
“You boys fing stink. You fing reek.”
And then he just drives off.

Fumi looks at me and goes,
“Did that asshole just say we fing reek?”*
And I’m like, “I guess so.”
Then we just went back inside and had a good night playing.

So anyway — I hope you enjoyed the track San Diego Nights.
Because honestly, this was a typical San Diego night for me.
