Set the Mood with Flunk!

As the 61st guest of the Set the Mood series, Flunk brings a thoughtful approach to the art of the opening set. For him, a proper opening set is approachable for the listener but complex for the DJ. It is like preparing an appetizer to show you could also craft the main course. It does not have to steal the show. Instead, it should hint at all the flavors still to come: the tension, the depth, the groove, the release.

But the best appetizer depends on much more: the weather, the room, the drinks. Maybe the people are not even hungry yet. That is why this set builds on suggestion rather than demand. A splash of pressure, some hidden funk, and a hint of Detroit. It is not supposed to be fancy. It simply poses a few questions, quiet ones, and trusts the rest of the night to provide the answers.

Flunk is a DJ based in The Hague who takes listeners back to a time when techno and house were first gaining traction, when religion and spirituality were still deeply intertwined with electronic music, when synths broke down from time to time, and when vocals were barely in tune.

Inspired by his father’s ever-growing music collection and professional DJ career, Flunk blends techno and classic house with a modern twist. He places special focus on uncovering the hidden and not-so-hidden gems that helped shape modern-day electronic music.

As the 62nd guest of the Set the Mood series, SKARÆ is introduced as a 23-year-old producer and DJ from Culemborg, known for his thoughtful and dynamic approach to sound. For him, a perfect opening set is a slow burn, a journey that ebbs and flows in energy and rhythm while maintaining a hypnotic momentum.

Every element is chosen with precision and purpose, creating space for experimentation with rich textures and unexpected sounds. In his opening sets, he aims to draw listeners in, inviting them to remain grounded on the dance floor while staying curious about what comes next.

Set the Mood with Creznight!

This 63rd edition of Set the Mood captures the essence of how Creznight first fell in love with techno. When he stepped into a club for the very first time, the room was still empty, but he was instantly hooked. The music wasn’t heavy yet, but it was beautiful. There was space between the sounds, carried by deep, rolling basslines. Even though it was loud, it didn’t feel harsh. The smoke filled the air, and the atmosphere was mysterious, with pads and subtle strings adding melody in the background. The bass felt warm, almost like it was breathing with the room. For Creznight, it was a spiritual feeling.

To him, that’s the essence of an opening set. It should feel calm but alive, full of variety without being overwhelming. It’s about building slowly, guiding the energy step by step, always one move ahead of the crowd. In his opinion, the hardest, and most important, slot of the night is the opener. Without a strong opener, the vibe can be ruined before it even begins. He compares it to waking up fully stressed—you spend the whole day recovering.

That’s why Creznight believes an opening set should have a sense of predictability and flow, but never fall into monotony. It should explore deeper sounds, with enough variety to keep the room engaged and gradually evolve into something more danceable for the next DJ. In this mix, he has leaned into that deeper side, creating a warm, rolling journey that starts subtle and builds into movement.

As the owner of Oefenmeesters, one of our own, Creznight carries that same vision into his wider work: creating spaces, sets, and experiences that inspire growth, connection, and flow.

For the 64th edition of the Set the Mood series, the featured guest is OBSERVER, an Amsterdam-based producer and multifaceted DJ with more than six years of experience across various genres. Well-acquainted with the music industry, OBSERVER represents the outcome of years of dedication and serves as a direct expression of his passion.

For him, a perfect opening set is one that creates a space filled with melody and drive, setting the tone for what is to come. With this vision in mind, he has crafted a set that unfolds gradually, blending textured sounds with deep, rich melodies. The intention is to guide listeners into a hypnotic journey, told in chapters, and steadily building momentum toward the next DJ.

As a performer, OBSERVER is capable of delivering a wide range of experiences, from DJ sets to Hybrid Live setups and full hardware live sets. This versatility ensures that each performance is unique, staying true to the essence of DJing while continually pushing himself forward.

As the 65th guest of the Set the Mood series, we are proud to introduce Florian Laurent. For him, a perfect opening set is not about going full force from the very beginning, but about creating a foundation. He sees it as a chance to guide a room into a flow that sparks curiosity about what is still to come, while setting the tone for the rest of the night.

Florian Laurent is a 29-year-old artist from Arnhem. Music has always played a central role in his life, not only as something to listen to, but above all as a way to create atmosphere and translate emotions. When he first started playing, he quickly realized that it was never just about mixing tracks together. For him, it was about telling a story. Behind the decks, he shapes a journey in which tension, emotion, and energy flow seamlessly into one another.

His sets often begin dreamy and melodic, allowing the listener to slowly settle into the flow. From that light and floating start, he builds the tension step by step, with the music becoming darker, more hypnotic, and more intense.

In terms of style, Florian moves within the deeper and hypnotic currents of techno, combined with groovy, minimalist, and rhythmic elements. He has a love for repetitive patterns, dark textures, and tight rhythms that slowly lock together. For him, music must be more than just sound. It should be something that can be felt, as if the space itself transforms and the listener can completely lose themselves in the flow.

Florian draws inspiration from artists and movements that seek balance between subtlety and intensity. He avoids quick peaks or forced drops, instead focusing on a steadily rising tension that pulls the audience further into depth. In this way, he creates sets that not only carry energy but also form a hypnotic journey in which the crowd can sink in and let themselves be carried away.

His goal is always to tell a story that lingers, moving from light and immersive to dark and raw, and everything in between.
