Hell Yeah is back to extract another sublime single from Michele Mininni's Pop Archetypes album, with 'Vertigo' up next alongside a remix from label favourite and downtempo king Calm.

Italian leftfield wizard Mininni has released on the likes of R&S, Optimo Trax and Internasjonal, but on his debut album, he mixed up a new palette of broken beats, worldly rhythms, jazz, and live drums into a diverse and multicultural trip.

At the heart of it is the gorgeous 'Vertigo', a heavenly interlude of shimmering wordless vocals, yearning melodies and widescreen design with gentle synth notes bringing the movement. Calm is a label favourite who has remixed and released albums and EPs here many times before. He elevates the track by layering in a languid dub rhythm and synths that swirl around the groove while the choral vocals bring blissful feels.

Once the Pop Archetypes mixes are finished, stay tuned for a special 10” follow-up called Not Archetypes.

Playing Out Of Time 018 [tribute to Keith McIvor] - July 4 2025

This celebratory mix of Optimo (Espacio) and particularly Keith (aka JD Twitch's legacy could've been 10 hours long, such is the length and breadth of great music Keith has turned me on to. Whole strata of underground music were first brought to my ears in sweaty nights at Optimo's legendary Sunday night residency at the Sub Club in Glasgow. Even beyond the club nights, the Optimo Music label often drains my Bandcamp funds with its incredible roster of talent. 

May Jah speed Keith and Johnny for the excellent work they do.

It’s been a lil while since we released our EP Losing Perspective on Optimo Music, and just before we share some very exciting news with you, we want to look back and share a video created by Mihály Podobni for one of our favorite tracks from that EP - All Diving Lucid Blue.
The video was created entirely with analog video techniques, combining no-input and camera feedback using ’90s video mixers. Signals loop back into themselves to form ever-shifting, fluid imagery: no external footage, only synthesized visuals generated within the video system. Inspired by the track’s spacey, melancholic yet futuristic atmosphere, it reflects Mihály’s vision of a cosmonaut’s heimweh: drifting in nostalgia, recalling the endless blues of Earth – its skies, clouds, waters, and the planet itself.

We’d like to dedicate this video to Keith McIvor (JD Twitch) / Optimo Espacio. Your vision and passion have inspired us long before we joined the Optimo Music family. You are a compass for so many of us – thank you 💙

On 28th September 2025 I went for a walk around some places in Glasgow that I remember Keith from. I listened to tracks that I associate with those places. And I recorded some words at each of them. I then put all of it together as a record of the walk.

Stir Stroll

A mix done by JD Twitch around 2011 to soundtrack the 1992 documentary film Baraka. From memory, Twitch said that this mix wouldn't sync exactly as he wanted to the film as he ended up mixing it alongside a projection that was running at a slightly different speed. Regardless, the audio itself is worth it. RIP Keith, Optimo forever.

Yachtrock October Mix 2025

JD Twitch, who we lost this month, but who lives on in so many different ways, would no doubt roll his eyes at the idea of a tribute mix, so let’s just call this a mix. 

From disco to disco, bleep to raptor, footwork, acid house, ambient, pop and beyond, this is music born in the projects, the streets, the clubs, the squats, the basements and the after parties... of Chicago, Caracas, New York, London, Glasgow, Europe and the world. It is the music of migration. The music of community. The music of home. 

I had a handful of tracks I planned to play, but most of them didn’t make it in. Instead I just made this off the cuff, on a pair of turntables, playing what felt right in that moment. I am so proud to call myself one of Optimo’s children. There are a couple of my more famous sisters and brothers on here too, as well as those who paved the way for all to follow, the teachers and the pioneers, many of whom I first encountered through Keith and Jonnie. Most importantly - and maybe I am mad for even trying - I wanted to capture, in my own unpolished and amateur way, Keith’s bold and joyfully irreverent approach to mixing which, as anyone who ever caught one of his sets, was technically astonishing and ALWAYS coupled by utter devotion to the music and the artists and engineers who made it, and to the creative integrity of the work. It’s a rare and beautiful combination, in a DJ, in any kind of artist, in a person. 

This selection is of course completely personal and does not necessarily represent what Keith would play, but if I've captured some of his spirit here then I will be chuffed. And if you hate it, go do it better yourself!
