Skull Tower! Serbian History and the Battle of Cegar Hill

We trace Venice's remarkable flowering between the 1300s and 1500s, in which it astonished Europe as a center of commercial and imperial power, learning, and art, as well as its repeated struggles -- with the bubonic plague, the Ottoman Turks, the rival Italian states, and the Catholic Church -- that forced Venice to give up its empire, and to transform into a pleasure-ground of music, theater, sex, and revelry -- arguably becoming the world's first tourist attraction -- before finally losing its long-treasured independence and becoming a pawn of modern powers.

Πώς αντιδρά μια κοινότητα όταν εμπλέκεται στη δίνη των εθνικισμών μιας ολόκληρης γεωγραφικής περιοχής; Ο Χρήστος Τριανταφύλλου συζητά με τον  ερευνητή του Κέντρου Μικρασιατικών Σπουδών Δημήτρη Καμούζη για την ελληνική εκδοχή αυτού του ερωτήματος, με αφορμή την έκδοση του βιβλίου «Έλληνες στην Κωνσταντινούπολη. Εθνικισμός των ελίτ και μειονοτικές πολιτικές (1918-1930)» (Εκδόσεις Εστία). Υπερβαίνοντας την οπτική ότι οι ελληνικές κοινότητες ήταν παθητικοί δέκτες των εξελίξεων και απλώς περίμεναν την ένωση με την Ελλάδα, ο συγγραφέας ξεκινά από τα μέσα του 19ου αιώνα και εξετάζει την κοινότητα των Ρωμιών της Κωνσταντινούπολης, για να φτάσει έως το Ελληνοτουρκικό Σύμφωνο του 1930. Μέσω αυτής της εξωελλαδικής οπτικής, φωτίζονται από διαφορετικές γωνίες μεγάλα γεγονότα όπως το Κίνημα των Νεότουρκών, ο Εθνικός Διχασμός και η Μικρασιατική Καταστροφή και σχετικοποιούνται νομοτέλειες και στερεότυπα. Με αυτή την οπτική αναδεικνύονται εξελίξεις που εμπλουτίζουν την ιστορική γνώση για το πρώτο μισό του 20ού αιώνα, όπως οι αντιθέσεις των ελίτ εντός της κοινότητας της Κωνσταντινούπολης, η συστράτευση της ηγεσίας της με τον βενιζελισμό και, μετά το 1923, ο εγκλωβισμός της κοινότητας ανάμεσα στους αντίπαλους εθνικισμούς του ελληνικού και του τουρκικού κράτους.

We follow the long debate over whether and where the remains of the ancient legendary city of Troy could be found, and we see how the mystery was solved by the excavations overseen by the brilliant, ruthless, and indefatigable German businessman, explorer, and serial liar, Heinrich Schliemann.

Pt. 2 will examine how modern scholars and excavators have used the finds from the site in Turkey -- including the long lost priceless "Treasure of Priam" -- to reconstruct the city and its place in the Bronze-Age world.
