The Invisible West - 'What About, What If, What Now'

“Too Hard for Help” was written out of lived experience in rural New South Wales — where being autistic often means being left behind. In small towns, support systems are scarce, and when they do exist, they can turn people away for being “too complex” or “too hard.” This song gives voice to that silence.

The lyrics tell the story of calling for help and being met with rejection, of doors closing quietly while pain is hidden away. It’s about what happens when disability and geography collide — when distance, stigma, and misunderstanding leave people isolated.

This is not just a personal song; it’s a call for change. It’s about showing the reality of what autistic people in regional Australia go through every day, and asking listeners to step closer rather than turn away.

Shared under Creative Commons, “Too Hard for Help” is free for others to sing and carry forward. All that’s asked is that the words remain true, the songwriter is credited, and the message of the song — that no one is too hard for help — continues to be heard.

MUSIC AS A FORM OF RETALIATION AGAINST INDUSTRIAL STAGNANCE

Strange as it may seem, music is created for other reasons than making a living. For many of us it is a way of staying interested in a life that is fraught with disappointment and otherwise encumbered with obstructions to contentment. Some have asked me why I don't create music that is more accessible, with potential for popular appeal. I'll consider that whenever it seems there is a shortage of such. For now, I focus on other sorts of potentials. Not much point in spending valuable time attempting popularity through imitation, and trying to do that better than others.

I've become addicted to drone. Again. I was the kid with his head on the piano, listening to the overtones die away, or pressing his ear to the steel hull of the ferry, enthralled by the sounds it created. I was the kid who formed wordless songs to accompany the sound of train wheels on a long journey, or hummed along with the fan on a hot day.

In the 60s I used to play my 45s on 16, or backwards, or by hand using razor blades as stylii.

I made cut-up tapes on a cheap cassette recorder in the 70s and experimented with reel-to-reel in the 80s.

I am not a musician. I am a scavenger of sounds. I use the most basic software to process those sounds, stretching and filtering until something emerges that makes a joyful noise. Or not...
