In this week's episode, Professor Florian Markowetz talks about his work and recent publication on chromosomal instability. Chromosomal instability is a dynamic process of DNA change, which leads to some DNA being present multiple times and some being lost altogether. Some cancers are dominated by this process of genomic disruption; ovarian, pancreatic and triple-negative breast cancer for example. These chaotic DNA changes mean that there are not good biomarkers present to guide treatment decisions. Florian's laboratory has found a structure underlying chromosomal instability and has identified genomic fingerprints which enable them to read out the fundamental reasons for the DNA changes.

Florian is a group leader at the Cancer Research UK Cambridge Institute at the University of Cambridge, UK.

Standing Post Presents My First Foot Beat - Ep. 016 - Christina Werries

Jade Gibson’s connection to cancer presented itself at the age of 16 when she was diagnosed with late-stage ovarian cancer. The experience ignited a desire to help individuals and families affected by cancer, leading her to pursue studies at the Harold P. Freeman Patient Navigation Institute. There she received education on the newly developing field and learned how to apply the navigation model to eliminate common barriers for patients moving through the healthcare system.

To date, Ms. Gibson has entered her 19th year of survivorship – lending her voice to address disparities that plague historically marginalized AYA patients from rural communities. As a champion for cancer advocacy, she participates in interviews, virtual conferences, webinars, marketing research, and fundraising. Additionally, serving in the following capacities:

• Committee member for the Georgia Cancer Control Consortium (GC3) Survivorship Workgroup and Georgia Prostate Cancer Roundtable Steering Committees.
• Patient Centered Outcomes Research Institute (PCORI) - Adolescent Young Adult (AYA) Advisory Panel project focusing on identifying barriers to recruiting and engaging underrepresented adolescent and young adults in cancer survivorship research.
• BVOGUE participant in the “Centering the Marginalized Voices of Black Patients with Gynecological Cancer as a First Step in Healthcare Curriculum Development,” study supported by MOQC (the Michigan Oncology Quality Consortium).
• Ovarian Cancer patient expert with Merakoi, creating healthcare solutions to benefit people living with a chronic illness.
• Citizen Scientist for the Ovarian Cancer Outreach with the “Connecting Families to Overcome Ovarian Cancer” study led by Emory University.

Dr Ines Machado, Dr Gabriel Funingana, Thomas Buddenkotte and Amied Shadmaan talk about the research they are undertaking within the collaborative project between GE Healthcare, the University of Cambridge and Cambridge University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust. They also provide an update on the development of the Oncocare platform.

Ines is a Research Associate in the Crispin Lab at the CRUK Cambridge Institute, University of Cambridge, UK.

Gabriel is a Clinical Fellow and PhD student in the Department of Oncology, University of Cambridge, UK.

Thomas is a consultant to the Crispin Lab. He obtained his PhD at the University of Cambridge, UK, working at the Department of Applied Mathematics and Theoretical Physics and the Department of Radiology. He is now affiliated with the Department of Diagnostic and Interventional Radiology and Nuclear Medicine at the University Medical Center Hamburg-Eppendorf, Germany, and the Hamburg-based company Jung Diagnostics.

Amied is Director of AI & Clinical Collaborations at GE Healthcare.

To highlight September as National Ovarian Cancer Awareness month, Mary Jacobsen speaks with Debra Green and Jeanette Isabella, both volunteers with Greater Newburyport Ovarian Cancer Awareness (GNOCA).

Jacobsen, an ovarian cancer survivor herself, talks with Green and Isabella about GNOCA’s mission to increase community awareness of ovarian cancer, to provide education about the subtle signs of the illness which often make it difficult to detect until it’s in advanced stages, and to spread awareness of the services and support provided by their organization, ranging from housekeeping and meals to discussion groups.

Green and Isabella also talk about GNOCA’s upcoming fundraiser, its 14th annual 5k Run/Walk, which takes place at 10 AM on Sunday, September 22nd. Funds raised by the event are devoted to ovarian cancer research. For information and to register visit: https://www.ocawareness.org/event-calendar

When Lynn received the diagnosis of ovarian cancer in 1999, her determined spirit guided her journey despite dismissive medical diagnoses and physically grueling treatments. Lynn’s frustration with Western medicine’s emphasis on physical symptoms and neglect of emotional and spiritual well-being inspired her friend, Christa Johnson, M.D., to rethink patient care. Lynn entrusted Christa with a mission: to improve the doctor-patient relationship and promote holistic healing. Through Lynn’s journey, Christa saw human health as an iceberg, with much lying beneath the surface. This perspective has shaped her career in mind-body medicine, hospice care, and her upcoming book.

Could the environment around a cancer tumour hold the key to better treatments?

In this episode, PhD students Emily Lythgoe and Ellie Bunce from the University of Cambridge discuss their research into tumour microenvironments. They explain why studying these environments in ovarian cancer (in a clinical setting) and head and neck cancer (in a pre-clinical setting) is so important for predicting how tumours might respond to treatment. They also highlight the value of integrating multiple technologies to create a more complete picture of a patient and their disease.

This insightful conversation explores how their work helps to understand the building blocks of these cancers and why such complex research could be crucial for developing new ways to treat patients in the future.

Their involvement is about making things easier, supporting quicker diagnoses, and helping to shape better, more personalised treatments.

The episode is incredibly uplifting. You will hear how empowering they find being part of the group and engaging with research. They are a shining example of how knowledge is power. Their support for one another, and for the researchers through the ups and downs of this disease, gives real hope for a better future.
