Michael Nicoll Yahgulanaas est un artiste visuel de la Nation Haïda, auteur et « mischief-maker » (fauteur de troubles). Son art est exposé dans des espaces publics et des collections privées du monde entier, notamment au British Museum, au Metropolitan Museum of Art, au Humboldt Forum de Berlin, au Seattle Art Museum, et au National Museum of the American Indian de Washington.
Le musée a récemment acquis une suite de 9 œuvres de la série « Les Carnets de Daalkaatlii ». Ce groupe de 26 peintures sur acrylique relate – dans une perspective à la fois mythologique et historique – le récit d’une inondation dévastatrice qui s’est produite sur une plaine herbacée (Daalkaatlii) de la grande île d’Haida Gwaii. C’est à cet endroit que s’était établit le peuple Auu Gitans, lignée des grands-pères de Michael Yahgulanaas. En plus de puiser dans la tradition orale de son clan, cette œuvre qui raconte la survie et la résilience d’un peuple constitue également un exercice de mémoire pour le mischief-maker.
