✈ We are delighted to welcome American DJ and Producer from Chicago/Minneapolis, currently based in Berlin: JON HESTER.

Hailing from the Midwest US, Jon Hester is an embodiment of the movements, sounds, and attitude that have continued to push techno and house forward. His energy and enthusiasm brought him all the way from beginnings in Chicago and Minneapolis to his present home base of Berlin.

With music released on Rekids, Klockworks, Deeply Rooted, and performances worldwide at clubbing institutions such as Berghain Berlin, Rex Club Paris, fabric London, and Vent Tokyo, he is equally keen for the fresh intensity of newer clubs dotting South America and South Africa. Jon continues building on the very expression he connected with more than 25 years ago via his label, Participation, an outlet for his own output as well as collaborative efforts with fellow artists in the global techno and house community. The collaborations are realized through a reciprocal exchange of sketches between artists, with artwork consisting of a simple one-line drawing from Hester himself – underscoring the directness, honesty, and immediacy of the music presented.

Participation launched in October 2023 with a solo EP from Hester, followed by collaborations with Panorama Bar favorite Cassy, Madrid Techno figurehead Tadeo, Tokyo's legendary DJ Shufflemaster, Swedish mainstay Joel Mull, UK phenomenon The Advent, Icelandic icon Exos, American live act Lady Starlight, and Uruguayan upstart William Arist. With more projects in the works, Participation will continue to inspire, surprise, and delight listeners around the globe, with the impressive depth and breadth of Hester’s tastes and abilities on full display.

Its structure shifts from reflective verses to powerful, anthemic hooks, creating a sonic way that challenges the listener to think, resist arrogance, and embrace resilience. PARADOX PODCAST #211 -- FAUSTØ

In mid-2020, the Tech Itch camp started sending emails teasing Moving Shadow-related action. It was a bright spot in the darkness of the pandemic, which was in many ways about things ending. This was something starting, or picking up a thread long abandoned. Moving Shadow, the most important dnb label of the '90s, trailed off in the 00s for any number of reasons.

Over/Shadow 01 dropped in November 2020, somewhat innocently with Blame's Lift Off/Star Traveller, tracks clearly made circa '96-'99. But unlike many pandemic-era DAT unearthing projects, the label then looked ahead. Since then, O/S has featured both Moving Shadow alumni (Dom & Roland, Technical Itch, Nookie, Flytronix) and current artists building on their legacy (ASC, Detboi, Abstract Drumz, Nectax).

5 years is both a short and a long time. In dnb, it's long, enough to build what I think of as a center. The music has countless branches now, some far removed from its roots. Over/Shadow has bridged the past with the future with intention and authenticity - no cash grab remixes, no publicity stunts. The label's confidence shows in its high number of two-track 12" releases. Today's profusion of music and high pressing costs have made four-track releases the norm. It's a statement now for a label to say, here are two tracks, they are enough.

This mix had to start with "Lift Off", but I had no preconceived notions otherwise. Fairly quickly an arrangement suggested itself: a warmup first third, a banging middle, a deeper last movement. The quiet winner here is DJ Trax, with 20% of the track list - 3 solo tracks and 2 collabs as Mixrace with Paradox.

These 25 tunes (and one tease) present just one path through the already considerable O/S discography. They omit a good number of anthems and great releases - a completely different track list would be just as valid. (In fact, there's probably a non-dnb mix lurking in the catalogue.) This is just my snapshot of Over/Shadow right now. That was what Moving Shadow excelled at back in the day, documenting the music. We are fortunate that Over/Shadow has carried on this work.

DJ Trax started Drumming at 7, DJing at 12 and at 15 he formed the hip hop group Mixrace with two MC`s (Dev Paradox + Leke Aerosoul.)
Trax released his first track a year later (1991) on Brain Records alongside DJ Raw. 

In the same year Trax and Dev signed to Moving shadow.
Over the next 3 years he released Solo 
12"s on Shadow under DJ Trax and Joint releases under Mixrace.

In 94 Trax + Paradox set up 5 record companies with Scott W and Gary S Stronghold, Mixrace Productions, Offset, Nautilus+ Mobhanded.

They released a couple of dozen 12"s on the labels, both solo, and duo (under Brown + Dangerman.) Trax + Paradox also collaborated with Hyper On Experience on Stronghold + Timeless.

From 97 to 2003 Trax mainly focused on downbeat/leftfield music. He released an album and two 12"s on LaCerba/3mv as well as releasing on Goodlooking, Kriztal, Mole, Beats + Pieces and Hed Kandi. I also Remixed Kutis Blow The Breaks!

From 2003 to 2009 Trax released a further two albums 1,000 Pictures + Thoughts In Widesceen which was on the front cover on Knowledge Magazine.

Trax also released on Outsider Music, Ocyris, Paradox Music, AKO Beatz, Omni Music, Skeleton, Transmute, Mole, Tempo, Next Phase, Repertoire, OSR, Subvert Central, Subtle Audio, Crisis, Misspent Music, Scientific, Syncopathic Recordings and my own label Audio Buffet.

Over the years as well as Paradox Trax has collaborted with Naibu, Ricky Force, Nucleus, DSP, Macc, Infest,Cryogenics, KJ Sawka, Becki Biggins + Enjoy. 

Trax has released a series of EP`s with US Hip Hop group Assorted Anonymous. Followed by a Vinyl album.

Alongside the releases he has also written music for many TV/Multimedia projectsand Scored for the Feature Film Shifty. He also has a bi-weekly radio show with Nucleus called 'Catch a Groove'

He has DJ`d in many cities across Europe and run nights through out this time.
