🎛️ Live from Bali – this one got grimy real quick…

I dardied and phalthied up an AJ Hall drum break, drove it through the Audiopunks Telefunken Spring Mixer and a Softube VCA compressor for that analog crunch. Then I took a pitched-up Minta Foundry x Al Hug guitar sample from Drum Broker’s Site Sampler Vol II and layered it with a gritty Decap Drums That Knock 808—saturated using Softube’s free Saturation knob.

Then came the sauce:
🔁 sidechain → delay → sidechain → delay → autopan
…for that swirling stereo pump and motion. Add a healthy dose of tape delay and Trackspacer to carve it out just right.

📱Also… uploading this the hard way after my phone got destroyed by a tropical downpour last night. Praying for a Lazarus pool to resurrect it, but until then… we’re doin’ it live, old-school web style.

My studio companions Musya (Maltipoo) & Obuchka (Bichon Frise – “cloud ☁️” in Russian) kept me company while I blended samples from @looplairofficial x @reborn.sounds and chopped them into dusty boom bap drums from the @savethedrums Trilogy pack.

Drums + bass were sent through @yaboypax Overcompressor on the same bus — and it locked them together in a way nothing else could. Heavy @decapmusic / @drumsthatknock 808, layered with a @savethedrums break and a gritty @sovietfreestyle sample. Added the BA-1 Baby Audio synth and Pulsar Modular Fairuz P422 for extra tone shaping.
At the last minute I chopped a fire Vietnamese sample I saw on IG from @slowznguyen, sidechained against the main sample with @wavesfactory Trackspacer (x8 instances!) for that signature frequency-based movement. Master bus finished off with Pulsar Modular P455 MDN for glue + polish.

Dirty trashcan beats. Growing up in NYC in the Golden Era of Hip Hop, he is informed by the East Coast 90’s sound with touches of G-Funk and West Coast flavor, as he now resides in Oakland, CA. Currently working on a concept album with DJ Ammbush (Oakland Faders/Drums and Anmo) entitled “Drums and Ammo,” “Philthy,” as many know him, fuses obscure samples lifted from dusty vinyl dug from across the globe with retrofuturistic synths and garbage-can snares and rhinoceros charlie horse kick drums, laced with hi-hats drenched in kisses of the Gods of Rome. He has a steady output of beats and artistic works, including live beat performances. Dr. Gann has been working with TFS in Bay Area schools and community settings, and across the globe using Hip Hop beat making and culture as a mental health, educational, social justice and cross-cultural intervention. He has worked with more than 75,000 youth on six continents in the past six years through TFS and is currently developing the Therapeutic Beat Making (TBM) Model.
