Astrid Kamperman balanceert een hectisch gezinsleven als ouder van 4 jonge pubers met een fulltimebaan als onderzoeker op de afdeling psychiatrie van het ErasmusMC. Over de afgelopen decennia heeft ze zich vooral gericht op onderzoek op het gebied van vrouwen en psychiatrie. Daarin houdt ze bezig met onderwerpen als postpartum psychose, depressie tijdens en na de zwangerschap, maar ook maatschappelijke kwetsbaarheden zoals huiselijk geweld en stigma. In de laatste jaren ontsproot een nieuwe loot aan de boom, en kwam het onderwerp PMDD op haar pad. Onderzoek naar dit onderwerp en deze patiëntengroep raakt haar niet alleen professioneel, maar ook op persoonlijk vlak. De Period-study is een bijzonder voorbeeld van hoe een patiëntenvereniging de drijvende kracht kan zijn achter onderzoeksinitiatieven.

Alice Groen is moeder van twee tienerdochters en staat vol energie in het leven, heeft een leuke baan en fijne vriendinnen en familie. Helaas is Alice ook ervaringsdeskundige PMDD en heeft ze 12 jaar moeten wachten op deze diagnose. Voorheen dacht ze dat ze gek was, iemand anders het af en toe overnam en ze diegene de titel: Manisch Destructieve Heks gaf. Nu, 16 jaar later na het begin van deze ‘hormonale shit’ zoals ze het zelf noemt, blijken medicatie maar vooral acceptatie de sleutel te zijn voor een goed leven met PMDD.

Mind defines PMDD as - “Premenstrual dysphoric disorder (PMDD) is a very severe form of premenstrual syndrome (PMS). It causes a range of emotional and physical symptoms every month during the week or two before your period. It is sometimes referred to as 'severe PMS'. 

PMDD occurs during the luteal phase of your menstrual cycle. This is the time between when you ovulate and when your period starts.” 

It is listed as a mental health problem in the DSM-5, one of the main manuals that doctors use to categorise and diagnose mental health problems. Some of the symptoms include severe depression, anxiety and sometimes suicidal ideations.

Jerilynn C. Prior BA, MD, FRCPC (former ABIM, ABEM) was a Professor of Endocrinology and Metabolism at the University of British Columbia in Vancouver, BC. She has spent her career studying menstrual cycles and the effects of the cycle’s changing estrogen and progesterone hormone levels on women’s health. She founded the Centre for Menstrual Cycle and Ovulation Research (CeMCOR) in 2002 and serves as the Centre’s Scientific Director. She was also the British Columbia Centre Director of the Canadian Multicentre Osteoporosis Study (CaMos), that is studying osteoporosis, fractures and bone mineral density and has followed over 9000 adult women and men across the country for over 19 years, plus about a 1000 younger women and men aged 16-24 for two years.
