His name is Cristian Díaz and his crime is supporting Palestine

The March 17, 2024 episode of Mic Check features an interview from 2020, when host Mike Merli was in conversation with Mariyann Soulemane, sister of Mubarak Soulemane, a 19 year-old Black Muslim teenager who was murdered by CT State Police (in collaboration with West Haven Police) on January 15, 2020.

Mubarak Soulemane was 19 years old. 

Mubarak Soulemane was a student at Gateway Community College in New Haven. 

Mubarak Soulemane was an athlete, who loved playing basketball. 

Mubarak Soulemane was an entrepreneur, studying business. 

A teenager, with a heart of gold who would literally give the shirt off his back to help someone. And he did exactly that, on multiple occasions. 

His kindness and generosity are reflected in the many friends he had that mourn his loss. 

He had dreams of traveling the world. 

He had a family that loved him so much.

And now all of that is gone for Mubarak.

In a rare instance, Trooper Brian North was actually indicted on criminal charges for taking Mubarak’s life.

However, on Friday, a jury consisting of mostly older white men, rendered a NOT GUILTY verdict on all counts North was charged with.

Fun Facts:
* Out of His Head is a song that features a collaboration between George and Dean Trotter.
* This song is in the key of D minor.
* The lyrics were written on 3rd July 1986, according to an original lyric document.
* The guitar part had been composed a few months previously.
* George was very pleased that Dean was able to write some lyrics to complete the song as the guitar part pleased him.
* Dean's melodic wailings towards the end represents the sirens of police cars.
* The drum solo represents the blows from fisticuffs, boots and truncheons that rain down from all sides upon the victims of police brutality.
* Dean wrote these lyrics very shortly after being shocked and horrified to witness his friend Jack the Frag being brutally arrested and beaten in Exeter High Street in broad daylight at around lunchtime for having a blim of hashish in his pocket.
* Dean himself had been attacked and brutally beaten by police whilst travelling to the unofficial 1986 Stonehenge Festival just a couple of weeks before.
* The previous year, the Stonehenge Festival was prevented from happening by the police.
* That incident became known as The Battle of the Beanfield, and the terrible and unnecessary police brutality was documented in the media worldwide.
* The Levellers wrote a song about the incident on their well known album Levelling the Land.
* A few weeks after the Stonehenge battle, in autumn 1985, George was taken into the back yard of Exeter police station and assaulted by an officer for reporting his bicycle stolen.
* Police brutality was commonplace in England in the 1980s.
* A lot of people in those days referred to the police as “Thatcher’s Gestapo”.
* Fortunately the uk police are far better today than they were in the 1980s.
* Due to many years of cassette deterioration, the quality of this recording is not great.
* We have managed to improve a little on what remained.
* Out of His Head continued to live on as a staple of Rough Terrain’s live set after The Subterraineans had folded.

Sadly, Dean took his own life by suicide at the Clifton suspension bridge, Bristol, in 1994. He was just 29 years old.

Dean had no help at all from the uk medical profession or social services for his mental health, addiction and homelessness. If he had had some professional help he would surely still be here with us today.

Rest in peace, Dean.

A Sacramento Lawsuit and the Fight for Police Accountability

In the latest episode of Everyday Injustice, host David Greenwald sits down with civil rights attorney Marissa Hatton of the Lawyers’ Committee for Civil Rights of the San Francisco Bay Area and community activist Meg White to examine a pivotal case against the Sacramento Police Department. The lawsuit, stemming from police violence during the George Floyd protests in 2020, sheds light on the city’s response to racial justice demonstrations and the long road toward accountability and reform. Despite a monetary settlement, plaintiffs and advocates remain deeply frustrated by the court’s refusal to impose lasting injunctive relief.

Hatton recounts the harrowing details behind the legal battle, which challenged the Sacramento Police Department not only for excessive force—including the widespread use of chemical agents and rubber bullets—but also for viewpoint discrimination under the First Amendment. While the court ruled that the department had violated the Fourth Amendment by using unlawful force and failing to train or discipline its officers, it stopped short of mandating policy changes to prevent future misconduct. For many, including the plaintiffs, that decision leaves them vulnerable to repeat abuse.

Meg White, one of six plaintiffs, offers an unflinching firsthand account of what it felt like to be maced, beaten, and traumatized during what was supposed to be a peaceful protest. White’s experience—shared by hundreds of demonstrators—illustrates a pattern of police escalation and indiscriminate retaliation. The contrast between the violent crackdown on racial justice protesters and the relative restraint shown to Stop the Steal demonstrators is a key element of the case, revealing a disturbing double standard in how law enforcement responds to dissenting voices.

Though the court acknowledged a pattern and practice of unconstitutional conduct, the ruling left systemic change off the table—deepening public distrust. As the conversation turns toward ongoing protests and growing authoritarianism across the country, this episode is both a sobering postmortem of one city’s failures and a warning about what happens when legal victories don’t translate into institutional reform. Hatton and White make one thing painfully clear: without accountability and structural change, the injustice will repeat itself.

Songwriting has been a lifelong passion for me, dating back to elementary school when I first began crafting stories, poems, and eventually lyrics. As a former drummer in various bands, I always relied on others to bring my words to life musically. However, after a long hiatus from drumming, I decided to take the leap and learn to compose music to accompany my lyrics. Through classes and dedication, I've embarked on a new journey, breathing fresh life into old lyrics and penning new ones. You'll find a mix of older and newer works here. Especially for some of the lyrics. 

Music has been a part of me for as long as I can remember. One of my earliest memories is being completely entranced by 'The Little Drummer Boy' as a very young child. There was something about the rhythm and the melody that just captivated me. I must have played it a thousand times, wearing the record out, and from that moment on, I was hooked. I knew I wanted to be a drummer and to create that magic for others. 

But I was too young then, and of course, I couldn't afford a drum set just yet. So, I turned to writing as a way to express myself. As I mentioned above, I started with stories, then poems, and eventually, lyrics. I found that writing was not only a way to tap into my creativity, but also a way to process my emotions and experiences. 

As I grew older, my love for music only deepened. I realized that music has this incredible power to transport us to different times and places, to evoke emotions and memories that we thought were long forgotten. It's a universal language that can bring people together like nothing else can. 

For me, writing lyrics is a cathartic experience. It's a way for me to tap into my emotions, to process the world around me, and to create something that I hope will resonate with others. And when I hear my words come to life in a song, it's truly magical. It's a feeling that never gets old, and it's what keeps me coming back to music time and time again. 

I love many genres of music and artists of many genres. And if you listen to some of my songs, you will find that I like to make songs of different genres as well as mix different genres into each song. One of my all-time favorite bands is Evanescence, and I have made a lot of songs where I have tried my best to emulate that sound. 

Now, I have recently started experimenting with new sounds. I never heard of glitch beats before I took music classes, and now I'm fascinated with the sound, so I have been experimenting with glitch beats recently.
