Mauao is my take of the Maori legend.

The story of Mauao is a well-known Maori legend from New Zealand, specifically tied to the Bay of Plenty and Mount Maunganui, also known as Mauao.

Mauao, meaning "caught by the dawn," is a sacred mountain with a rich narrative about love, rejection, and transformation. The legend begins with three mountains: Otanewainuku, the mighty leader of the land; Puwhenua, the beautiful female mountain; and a nameless, lowly hill who lived in their shadows. This nameless hill fell deeply in love with Puwhenua, but she was already in love with Otanewainuku and did not return the hill’s affection.

Heartbroken and overwhelmed by rejection, the nameless hill decided he could no longer stay where he was. He asked the patupaiarehe, the fairy-like people of the night, to help him escape to the ocean so he could drown himself. They began to drag him toward the sea under the cover of darkness. However, as dawn approached, the sun’s light caught the hill before he could reach the water. As daylight touched him, he was frozen in place, stuck forever at the entrance of Tauranga Harbour, where he remains today.

This hill, now known as Mauao, represents a powerful reminder of love, loss, and transformation. It stands proudly by the ocean, carrying the weight of its unfulfilled desire and the name that signifies its capture by the dawn.
