Premiere: PTHGN 'Binary Operation'

PTHGN is an artist who found his calling in music production while studying visual arts in Chicago. It was through attending local parties and club nights that he was first introduced to Chicago's House, Techno, and Footwork scenes, which would eventually become a major influence on his decision to pursue music. 
During his studies, PTHGN's artistic practice consisted of virtual, sonic, and light-based installations, as well as instrument design using interactive technologies. His work emphasized the relationship between sight and sound, ultimately leading him to focus on creating music in favor of visual art. 
Although his sound has primarily focused on electro, he draws influence from a wide range of genres, including techno, idm, industrial, jungle, garage, jazz, dub, hip-hop, and grime. 
2022 saw PTHGN’s first official releases, contributing tracks for V/A compilations on labels such as Crazed Behaviour, International Chrome, and Ovelha Trax. He has already received recognition for his work, having been featured on BBC 6 Music Radio’s “The People’s Party with Afrodeutsche” in early 2022. 
His dedication to pushing the boundaries of sound design and composition is evident in his recent pivot to a hardware and modular synth-based approach to production and performance. His tracks are crafted with the dance floor in mind, but never at the expense of musicality and experimentation. With his impressive artistic background, dedication to innovation, and unique sound, PTHGN is quickly establishing himself as an artist to watch out for. 

Which artists has influenced you the most?

- DJ Stingray, London Modular Alliance, Morphology, really there’s too many to name.  

What new projects/releases with your participation are expected in the near future?

- I have a few projects coming up soon. I’ve been working on separate projects with Alex Jann and Francois Dillinger, as well as an upcoming remix and original track for Ovelha Trax.

Which artists/labels is more relevant to you now?

- This is tough because there’s so much good music coming out right now. As far as labels I always love what comes out on Mechatronica, Cultivated Electronics, Zement, and Science Cult. For artists a few names I have to mention are Viikatory, Cyphon, Obzerv, The Droid, and Ekata as I’ve been keeping up with them for a few years and they’re always working on something top notch. 

What inspires you now to create music?

- A chance to step outside of everything going on in the world.  

What set-up do you use when creating music?

- For my setup the past few years I’ve been diving deep into eurorack as  well as hardware synths and drum machines. If I had to pick a few pieces I’d never sell they’d probably be anything by Mutable Instruments, my Digitakt from Elektron, and probably my Make Noise effects modules. Having worked with software music production for many years beforehand I can honestly say I haven’t quite found anything to emulate pieces like that in the box.

The air here tasted of secrets, heavy with whispers that felt eternal, secrets spun in ages long past and held in the crystalline silence of twilight—a twilight that reigned over ☰THERIA with no end or dawn.

In this suspended paradise, the Puppet Masters moved with a grace that was both enchanting and dreadful. They were ageless beings, impossibly beautiful, their faces as serene as carved marble, yet their eyes held the weight of eons, a cold fire that told of knowledge too profound to share and desires too dark to name. They did not rule with love or tyranny; theirs was a governance of elegance and mystery, a power that required no force, only the soft precision of a glance, a gesture—a slight lift of the hand that set worlds below to dance or decay.

To gaze upon ☰THERIA was to feel desire stir, yet never be sated. It was a place where destiny was not forged in battle or conquest but whispered in tones that stirred the soul to unease. And below, the realms of Phantasia and the Underground toiled, oblivious puppets in a silent play. The Puppet Masters turned them upon each other, weaving discord with the effortless ease of breathing, ensuring that Phantasians and the dwellers of the Underground would forever clash, forever hunger for something just out of reach. And as they fought, they remained blind to the wealth that amassed in ☰THERIA, to the Puppet Masters’ endless indulgence and the unyielding elegance that concealed their greed.

☰THERIA was a place where pleasure and agony danced hand in hand, where desire was a wound that could never close, and the line between ecstasy and despair was as thin as the mist that cloaked the realm. To glimpse it was to be drawn into its spell, forever marked, forever yearning—yet to reach it would be to unravel, to fall into an abyss of beauty so profound, it would be nothing less than oblivion.

80s Synthpop through to Chicago house, acid house, electro and techno.
No clippy-cloppy 'mnml' bobbins or business techno though.

Spent years being the obligatory 'Bedroom DJ' along with regular visits to the techno mecca 'The Orbit' and other nights, mainly Leeds based, such as 'Superconductor', 'Darkside' & 'Detatched', culminated with a DJ spot at Detatched in 2009 playing a mainly electro/italo-house set in the bar.
What followed then was a monthly resident spot playing techno when supporting artists in the main room or the chance to play electro, house and electro-pop in the bar at Detatched followed by Future-Past and the short-lived Secret Maze, supporting some of the cream of the techno scene including warm-up slots for Claude Young, James Ruskin, Marcel Fengler, Shed, Peter van Hoesen, Joey Beltram, Octave One, Truss/MPIA3, Detroit Techno Militia, Forward Strategy Group, 65d Mavericks, Subjected and Xhin amongst others. That was supplemented by appearing on the same bill as many other DJs and artists including Hardfloor, CJ Bolland, Woody McBride, Alan Oldham, Rolando, Derrick May, DJ Bone, Reeko, Exium, Sandwell District, Grovskopa, Ancient Methods, Inigo Kennedy, Bas Mooy, Damon Wild, Takaaki Itoh, Go Hiyama and Neil Landstrumm.

DVS NME is an Electro music producer/deejay and Post Punk enthusiast living in Colorado. He runs a weekly mix series called @DarkScienceElectro (est 2010) and is actively producing under the name @DVSNME (est 2000)
