This week on Voices from the Frontlines... THE TRIO IS BACK; Alan Minsky, Channing Martinez, and Eric Mann speak with Meena Roman from the Third-World Network, about moving forward the Black Nationalist, Third-World Alliance movement. The white-settler state that is the United States that has raped, pillaged, and created what they now call the "third-world" is afraid of being called the genocidal white-settler state that it is. Malcolm X began shifting the base of his leadership position from the Nation of Islam to one that was rooted in Black Nationalism. He understood that religion, at the base of his leadership, couldn't unify the Black nation in the United States, but a Black Nationalist platform could unify the Black Nation. 

The Pacifica Radio Archives is a massive collection of audio content from voices like Malcolm X, the last recording of Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King, Angela Davis, Fannie Lou Hamer, James Baldwin, W.E.B. DeBois, Lorraine Hansberry, and thousands more.

On this week’s From The Vault, we continue with Part TWO of Pacifica's Original 1975 reading of George Orwell’s classic dystopian novel, Nineteen Eighty-Four.

We left off as our hero Winston, repressed and agitated remembers a Dream he had of being in close proximity to a man he thought for SURE felt the same way about The Party and Big Brother as he did. 

O’Brian was the man’s name. Winston was certain O'Brian was wise far beyond those that fell in line with The Party demands. In this dream O’Brian passes him and says something to Winston that hints of this wisdom he must pursue further.

The entire book was read on-air by longtime Pacifica morning show host Charles Morgan in 1975. He was joined by legendary voice over artist June Foray.

We left off as our hero Winston was recalling a moment in time when he had proof in his hands that the Government Party was rewriting History, news stories, even works of literature so that they fell in line with The Party doctrine.

Leonard Cohen was a prolific and award winning poet, and at the request of Pacifica Station WBAI host Judy Collins she encouraged Leonard Cohen to perform live. Leonard's first performance was in fact at a WBAI benefit show. In 1974 He granted WBAI this lengthy interview where he spoke about music and reads from his earliest work and some then unpublished work.

On this week’s From The Vault, We Celebrate the Life and Work of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. with 2 speeches near the end of his life that rarely get any notice.

By 1967, Dr. Martin Luther King’s strategy for organizing had evolved beyond Civil Rights. He clearly saw how resources that could be helping the poorer communities were being absorbed by the Military Budget. He began strategizing for a broader based Poor People’s Campaign that went beyond the Black Communities and outreached to anyone who was poor.

You will hear many of these topics discussed in this February 25th, 1967 address sponsored by the Nation Magazine at a Nation Institute Conference in Los Angeles. The name title of his address is The Casualties of the War in Vietnam. 

Next we hear one of the last speeches of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. given in Anaheim California on March 16, 1968 just a few weeks before his assassination. This was given before the California Democratic Council at the Anaheim Convention Center.

On this week’s From The Vault, We Go back to April 15, 1991. Flagship Pacifica Station KPFA in Berkeley California was celebrating it’s 42nd Anniversary, and longtime music host Charles Amirkhanian invited music icon Frank Zappa for an afternoon of Politics. 

That’s right experimental music and composer who did about as much as one person could do to stretch the boundaries of music and creativity actually considered a run at the Presidency. 

He felt it would take an outsider to really shake up Washington and I’m pretty sure he would have done that and we’d be all the better for it.

On this week’s From The Vault, we go back to one of recordings from 1992, with a talk by leading intellectual Noam Chomsky called Creeping Fascism.

Remember that in 1992, America was just finishing a cycle of 12 years of Republican leadership in the White House, which ended with George H.W Bush’s Desert Storm Middle-East Military Operation that started it all. 

Let’s hear what this humble MIT Linguistics professor had to say about the growing trend of the consolidation of power and wealth into the hands of the few.

On this week’s From The Vault, We celebrate The Birthday of one of America’s most gifted playwrights, Lorraine Hansbury. At the age of 29 she was the youngest playwright and first Black dramatist to win the New York Drama Circle critics Award for her play A Raisin In The Sun.

About a year later Lorraine Hansbury visited the Pacifica Radio WBAI studios with fellow writing legends Langston Hughes, James Baldwin and Alfred Kazin and Emile Capouya. The topic of the day. The Negro in American Culture.

But First we hear from actor Louis Gossett Jr. Former host Brian DeShazor and I drove out to his Malibu Beach home where we spoke to him about his experience with Lorraine Hansberry in early 2016. It turns out Louis was a New York Knickerbacker basketball player making good money when he went for an audition to this upcoming play A Raisin in the Sun. He got the part and now he had to choose between Professional Basketball and Acting… Let’s hear from Mr. Louis Gossett Jr. to hear his moment in history with Lorraine Hansberry in his own words.
