Topics and Guests: We begin the show today with Delphine Yandamutso and Claude Gatebuke two co-authors of the book "Survivors Uncensored: 100 + Testimonies of Resilience and Humanity."  "Survivors Uncensored" is a powerful collection of testimonies from survivors of the Rwandan genocide in 1994 as well as pre and post genocide atrocities including in the Democratic Republic of Congo and about the role of the U.S. and the West. The book offers poignant insights into their experiences and showcases stories of resilience and humanity.

Obi Egbuna, Jr. discusses the importance of liberation and Pan-Africanism in the context of African Liberation Day (ALD) (May 25) and how art can be used to transmit the message across generations.  Obi Egbuna, Jr. is a Founding Member and Executive Director of Mass Emphasis Children’s History and Theater Company (2012).  Obi Egbuna, Jr. is a journalist, African/a history teacher and playwright and is correspondent to The Herald, Zimbabwe’s national newspaper.

A new documentary by Nyasha Laing, "Kumina Queen", highlights the work by Imogene “Queenie” Kennedy a contemporary priestess in post-colonial Jamaica who catapulted her African spiritual practice into renown.  The film looks at questions such as what remains of the dance between the living and the dead after centuries of erasure? As noted in the description of "Kumina Queen": “Seeking understanding, artists and practitioners navigate a mysterious spirit world that offers a pathway to freedom, healing, and transformation - to those who choose it.”  The show features a conversation Nyasha Laing had with James Pope of Africa World Now Project collective and AfricaNow!’s Executive Producer and Co-Host a few months which we aired before. The discussion focused on African spiritual knowledge through the drum, dance, and nature in Jamaica and beyond. Nyasha Laing is a documentarian, researcher, writer, and lawyer. Her previous documentary was "Punta Soul" (2008) prior to Kumina Queen in the Wild. Nyasha Laing has served as a producer for award-winning PBS films including "Tell Them We Are Rising" (2017), "All Kinfolk Ain’t Skinfolk" (2018), "Belly of the Beas"t (2020), and "Into Dust" (2021). Topic and Guests: In November 1990 [1-4], more than 3,000 people from 25 countries attended the Malcolm X: Radical Tradition and a Legacy of Struggle conference held in New York City. More than 100 speakers led 24 sessions that deeply explored, contextualized, and situated El Hajj Malik El Shabazz in the genealogy of Black radical internationalism as a Pan Africanist. 

There is an argument that can be made that El Haj Mailk El Shabazz is an archetype of what I have argued elsewhere as a critical Africana human rights consciousness. .... When we turn attention to his evolution as an internationalist activist-theoretician, we can begin to truly grasp the breadth, depth and the rhythms of the various manifestations of Africana peoples struggle for freedom. 

With the insertion of Africana ways of being and forms of knowledge we can begin to see that the human as produced from European modernity, is not the same conception of human as articulated in the various indigenous Africana cosmology, epistemology, ethics. In short, and quoting El Ha Malik El Shabazz, ‘we are talking the same language’. .... 

Shabazz’s critical Africana human rights consciousness called for a reassessment of the African American manifestation of the struggle for freedom to (re)focus its objectives to fight for human rights within an internationalist frame, to be resituated in the long tradition of Black radical internationalism and Pan Africanism. ... 
More importantly, his concerted efforts to develop ideological and organizational expression to a radical internationalist theory of freedom which characterized his evolution, particularly post-NOI, were immense. His direct personal influence on key circles of activists and organizations, historically and contemporarily, has proven to be significant. ...

Topic and Guests: Today AfricaNow! continues a series which highlights some of the discussion which took place during the Malcolm X: Radical Tradition and a Legacy of Struggle conference held in New York City in November 1990.  More than 3,000 people from 25 countries attended conference which featured more than 100 speakers led 24 sessions that deeply explored, contextualized, and situated El Hajj Malik El Shabazz in the genealogy of Black radical internationalism as a Pan Africanist.  In today’s program we feature Pt. III—Applying Malcolm, part of the series on this conference.  In the final installment Pt. III—Applying Malcolm on AfricaNow! features Barbara Ransby and Fran Beal. 

In this series, Africa World Now Project is sharing some of the sessions from this conference in an effort to engender serious engagement, in this very moment, a moment where it is essential to be intentional with one’s political practice with Malcolm. Not in the narrow confines of him as an individual or pigeonhole him to moments and soundbites, but to identify the tradition that produced Malcolm as a nexus, a point of entry for many into the seriously trying to figure out: what is to be done?

Here we have one of Oluseye's most striking works: a reimagined Canadian flag. Instead of the familiar red and white, you’ll notice the bold use of red, black, and green. These colours represent a connection to Pan- Africanism, a global movement that celebrates unity among people of African descent and a shared vision of liberation and empowerment.

The flag is fused with remnants of a fence from the shores Bedford Basin near Africville, the site of one of Nova Scotia’s most significant Black communities before it was destroyed in the 1960s under the disguise of urban renewal. This work invites us to think about the histories and stories that traditional national symbols, like the Canadian flag, often leave out.
