Thinking Allowed host Jeffrey Mishlove is a licensed clinical psychologist, an accomplished radio and television interviewer, and one of the most erudite and articulate personalities on television. He is the author of an encyclopedic volume of consciousness studies, The Roots of Consciousness. In November of 2021 Jeffrey was the first-place winner of the Bigelow Institute in Las Vegas essay competition winning $500,000. The title of his essay was “Beyond the Brain: The Survival of Human Consciousness After Permanent Bodily Death.” Jeffrey hopes this award will stimulate more academic research and academic study of the paranormal. Dr. Mishlove is a past director of the Association for Humanistic Psychology, and has served as President of the Intuition Network. Jeffrey holds the only doctoral diploma in parapsychology to be awarded by an accredited American university (University of California, Berkeley). A revision of his doctoral dissertation, Psi Development Systems, was released in 1988 as a Ballantine paperback. This book evaluates methods purported to train psychic abilities. He is also author of The PK Man. Jeffrey teaches parapsychology to ministers in training with the Centers for Spiritual Living (formerly the Church of Religious Science) through their Holmes Institute. Dr. Daryll Walsh will be sharing a special type of Christmas story from days of old.
Since childhood, Darryll Walsh has dedicated his life in pursuit of paranormal. A holder of a doctorate in parapsychology, he taught various courses in parapsychology at the Nova Scotia Community College, even as he pursued graduate studies in counselling psychology. He has authored four supernatural books: “Ghosts of Nova Scotia”, “Ghost Waters: Canada’s Haunted Sea and Shores”, “Legends and Monsters of Atlantic Canada”, and “That Which Survives: The Case of the Near-Death Experience”. Proclaimed “Canada’s Ghost Hunter” by the Ottawa Citizen. He has also researched, written and produced documentaries and television including “Zombie Mania”, “Pretty Bloody”, “Bigfoot’s Reflection” and “City of the Dead: Halifax and Titanic Disaster”. He hosted and narrated 13 episodes of the television series Shadow Hunter from 2005-2006. He was also consulted in episode #204 Poltergeist Phenomenon on the television show Supernatural Investigator. He is presently engaged in obtaining his doctorate in clinical psychology which will make him Canada’s first clinical parapsychologist; trained to treat those adversely affected by their experience of the supernatural.
Darryll has extensive experience in media relations, appearing on The Discovery Channel, CTV, Global, CBC 1 radio, and being extensively interviewed by national and regional newspapers such as The Globe and Mail, The Ottawa Citizen, The Chronicle Herald, and the Daily News, using his comprehensive knowledge and experience to clarify and educate various topics in the paranormal.

My guest this month is Dr. Bastiaan van Rijn.

Bastiaan is a postdoctoral researcher at the University of Fribourg, Switzerland. During his PhD, he has investigated how practitioners of different movements in the nineteenth century tried to scientifically prove life after death exists. The outcome of this project is the book Afterlife Research (forthcoming), as well as several open-access articles. Beside this, he is also interested in playful approaches to religion and divination in the contemporary West. His newest project centers on spiritual tourism.

This interview takes us into the fascinating world of Mesmerism—also known as animal magnetism—and its enduring influence on the boundaries between science, mysticism, and spiritual inquiry. Bastiaan gives a brief bio of Franz Anton Mesmer, who in the late 18th century proposed that an invisible fluid flowed through all living beings, capable of healing and revealing hidden truths. Though controversial and dismissed by many, Mesmer’s ideas sparked a lineage of thought that continues to shape contemporary conversations about consciousness, healing, and the legitimacy of scientific inquiry.

We discuss how Mesmerism blended science and mysticism, influenced public perception, and laid the groundwork for practices ranging from hypnotism and New Thought to modern-day energetic healing. Bastiaan’s own research picks up this thread, tracing how the experimental impulse to make the invisible visible evolved into afterlife studies, somnambulism, and psychical research.

From there, we dive into Bastiaan’s dissertation, which examines the emergence of a “scientific culture” in afterlife research—one grappling with empirical inaccessibility, unreliable intermediaries, and skeptical resistance. Through case studies of three spiritual animal magnetizers, Bastiaan uncovers how different strategies were used to stabilize claims and navigate the tension between belief and method.

Ultimately, this conversation invites us to rethink what counts as scientific, Bastiaan invites us to consider not just what these researchers claimed to find, but how they tried to find it, as well as how experimental practices in esoteric and spiritual domains contribute to broader dialogues about religion, and the unseen dimensions of human experience.

What emerges is a rich, transhistorical culture of inquiry—one that challenges our assumptions about science, religion, and the boundaries of legitimate knowledge.
