No messing about, it was hard, heavy and made for raving! So many cool songs on this mix. Even the opener, is epic! From there it goes a little bouncey, but mid way, it's relentless hard house. Paul King, the director of Paddington and Paddington 2, brings us Wonka, another reimagining of a British children's classic. Roald Dahl's beloved 1964 novel, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, has been adapted twice: once in 2005 by Tim Burton, but most memorably in 1971 by Mel Stuart, with Gene Wilder as eccentric chocolatier Willy Wonka. It's from the 1971 version that Wonka takes some of its cues (including musical ones), but in the service of that most 21st-century of cinematic artefacts: an origin story.

Within, discussions of: What we make of the world in which Wonka is set, one in which institutions purportedly in place for the public good are instead supportive only of corporate power; the reinterpretation of the Oompa-Loompas as a wronged people whose representative is out to retrieve what was stolen from them; Mike's dissatisfaction with CGI and visual effects in British films and the production of the vocals in Wonka's songs; José's opinion on Timothée Chalamet's career and (apparently) uneven face; whether this film really benefits from its sentimental backstory and overtones; and how chocolate is best enjoyed.

Throughout his 35 years as both a producer and DJ, Paul King has been responsible for anthem after anthem and floor filler after floor filler.
From his early releases such as “Elevate” on Jump Wax and “Kick it in” on TDV, right through to the more recent “What ya got” on Vicious and “Turn it up” on Toolbox, Paul’s productions have always been in a league of their own. To say Paul King had his own style just wouldn’t be fitting enough, as Paul created a whole new sound that has now been loved by hard house fans for well over a decade.
It was in the 90’s that Paul first burst onto the scene and was immediately taken under the wing of the late Tony de Vit, who instantly branded Paul “one to watch” for his fresh and innovative productions. With the support of Tony and every other influential Hard House DJ on the circuit, Paul soon became a regular name on the two record labels that were THE labels to be seen on, Tripoli and Tidy Trax. On Tripoli he gave us his F1 productions and on Tidy he delivered his fiercer than fierce Trauma releases… It was under these production names that Paul dominated the scene and became an inspiration to many.
His discography reads like an A to Z hard house bible, with remixes and releases on almost every major hard house dedicated label… these include the already mentioned Tidy, Tripoli, Toolbox and Vicious, along with labels old and new such as Trade, Deprivation, Knuckleheadz, TEC, Short Circuit, Flashpoint and Chug N Bump to name just a few.
His label Electrotek saw him move his style to Electro and Tech House, and was instantly recognised as the new “Paul King Sound”. His remixes of Armand Van Heldans “New York City Beat” and Fedde Le Grande’s “Put Your Hands Up For Detroit” were released on their respective labels to wide acclaim.
On the hard house side, he continued to push his sound further, releasing Trauma Trax 3, Trauma Trax Remixed, and Digital Frontiers. On the 20th anniversary of his first release on TDV, and the 25th anniversary of his DJing career, Paul worked closely with Vicious Circle to release “Odyssey – The complete Paul King collection”, a collection of more than 200 tracks that covered his entire career up to that point.
Then, on the 20th anniversary of his first Trauma release on Tidy, Paul released Trauma XX Part 1. An album of new material, where, once again Paul collaborated with producers and DJs that he admired.
Bringing the story up to date, this year sees the release of Trauma XX Part 2 - the album has 10 DJ friendly tracks and features collaborations with Rob Tissera, Aaron James & Seanie Jackson, Frank Farrell, High Dosage, Eamonn Fevah, Dawn Lee, Craig Jones, Ilogik, James Nardi, Steve Hill and Technikal.

"I have this romantic idea of the movies as a conjunction of place, people and experiences, all different for each of us, a context in which individual and separate beings try to commune, where the individual experience overlaps with the communal and where that overlapping is demarcated by how we measure the differing responses between ourselves and the rest of the audience: do they laugh when we don’t (and what does that mean?); are they moved when we feel like laughing (and what does that say about me or the others) etc. The idea behind this podcast is to satiate the urge I sometimes have when I see a movie alone – to eavesdrop on what others say. What do they think? How does their experience compare to mine? Snippets are overhead as one leaves the cinema and are often food for thought. A longer snippet of such an experience is what I hope to provide: it’s two friends chatting immediately after a movie. It’s unrehearsed, meandering, slightly convoluted, certainly enthusiastic, and well informed, if not necessarily on all aspects a particular work gives rise to, certainly in terms of knowledge of cinema in general and considerable experience of watching different types of movies and watching movies in different types of ways.
