Details of his Threnody did indeed become much imitated. As part of his composition, Penderecki invented various symbols to signify the effects he envisioned; these became standard in new music graphic notation, just as the sounds themselves became adopted by other composers who worked at the outer limits of acoustic possibilities. No live performance of the Threnody can be replicated exactly; although the piece is written out in careful detail, Penderecki allows the musicians some leeway in interpreting the score, the aleatoric aspects extending even to letting the players decide in what order they may play certain groupings of notes. There are no bar-lines in the score; instead, the duration of pitches or gestures is indicated by timings, in seconds. The piece can seem to stand on the brink of chaos at many moments, yet the composer keeps it under attentive control much as composers have always done.


The main problem was the audio engine of the game. It was designed to play up to four layers of music simultaneously, mixing them together regarding of what happens in the game. So for the music sequence which last two minutes there were actually eight minutes of music. This would make the recording session four times longer. The developers could not afford such a long session with the live orchestra. 
This is why Jason decided to record groups of instruments in short fragments
, then put them together and process them in the studio, creating a score from them. So it was like sound mining, making a musical Necromorph, as he mentions.


This term really fits to the Dead Space soundtrack, also considering its frightening effect on the listener. It is a hole with lot of scary scores in it. They are unsettling, brutal, aleatoric, full of awesome clusters and dissonances. For a common listener such music might be unpleasant. But to me, as I love musical experiments and dissonant sounds, it is a perfect accompaniment to what we deal with in the game. Dead Space OST flawlessly merges with the gore stylistics of this production. According to Jason, 
the musicians had lots of fun during the recording sessions
, since playing all those abstract sounds is not what classically trained musicians do every day.


To get around this problem, the transcriber describes the score through text, as well as by providing the score as a tactile graphic. Tactile graphics are common in braille to aid in reading an inherently visual resource, such as a map or a graph. The example of the tactile graphic score for this particular piece is exhibited above.


Twentieth Century music is an indelible part of Western art music history, and the third volume of the Norton Anthology sixth edition shows just how impactful this era of music has been to the modern age. The music section of NLS is committed to ensuring that all music, specifically such inherently visual material as graphic scores, is as accessible for the blind community as it is for the sighted.


As openings go Threnody to the Victims of Hiroshima packs a punch. That opening strings fortissimo shriek - held, then its gradual dispersal into a seething swarm of Molto vibrato tremors and of glissandi sliding steadily upwards and downwards over the interval of a quartertone, whose sirenlike quality suggests electronic music more than it does a normal string instrument. Then the sudden barrage of pizzicato and percussive effects is arguably more a soundscape than a musical work. And it's not even just sonically that Threnody is hitting you either. Visually, too - it's looking more like a work of abstract art or a diagram even than it is a musical score.


And hand in hand with this, he was getting noticed. In 1959 he entered three new compositions in the second Youth competition of the Polish Composers Union in Warsaw, and all of them won prizes. Stro
