Today's edition starts off with a greeting from Thistle, our resident singer/songwriter and founder of WLRN before diving into our world news segment with Cat Bradfield.

After the news, hear Ani DiFranco's song, Atom, in its entirety to get an idea of the enormity of the problem and its root in male dominion and madness.

Next, stay tuned for an interview Thistle did with Professor Cynthia Enloe of Clark University about the global nature of the nuclear problem and the different responses, actions and solutions of governments and peace activists. Cynthia emphasizes the work of ICAN, the International Campaign to End Nuclear Weapons https://www.icanw.org/and the book Banning the Bomb, Smashing the Patriarchy by Ray Acheson.

Then, hear riveting commentary delivered by aurora linnea in which she discusses the phallic nature of the Bomb and the absurdity that all of human history, culture and life could end in a moment of males punching in codes to blast off large penis-shaped bombs. Aurora explores the anit-nuclear movement led by feminists in the 1980s to show how women organized in the past and could do it again. She highlights the work of Dr. Helen Caldicott, among other inspirational anti-nukes feminists.

Finally, dive into the song Jezebel that Thistle wrote and recorded over 20 years ago about women's simultaneous bondage and resistance to the patriarchal nuclear age.

"To create the image for Edition 113, The Nuclear Threat, I used a photo of the ‘Fat Man’, the 21 kiloton implosion-type plutonium bomb that was dropped on Nagasaki, along with an image of a woman with atomic bomb injuries, an image of Nagasaki after the explosion, and an atomic bomb plume. I added red colors to the Nagasaki image, and magenta to the bomb plume. We see the woman from the back - over laid with blues and purples - and with the ruins of Nagasaki bleeding through her body. She is facing the destruction, the effects, but we can’t see her expression. 

The Fat Man bomb sits nestled next to the woman, taking up space, like the space that the nuclear war threat occupies in our society and our sensibilities."

Hive Mind is a lyrical descent into labels, thoughts, and self-dismantling. Pulsating piano chords and synths feel stylistically like a horror movie and the lyrics move between images of beauty and cosmic horrors. The narrator is a husk and becomes queen of their own negative swarm. It's an eerie overture that sets the confessional tone of the record. It defines what the A.N.T.s are and if the EP is set on repeat will cause a continuous cycle of emptiness, filling, then acceptance.

Cheektowaga Records stands as a testament to visionary entrepreneurship in the music industry. Founded in 1979 by Herbert "Little Herbert" Vincent Reid Jr., this independent rock label emerged from the vibrant heart of New York City's East Village, defying racial and genre conventions to create a platform for marginalized voices. Little Herbert, a Black American musician and visionary, channeled his life experiences into building a label that would challenge the status quo and leave an indelible mark on the NYC rock scene .

The Genesis of Cheektowaga Records
Historical Context and Foundation
Cheektowaga Records began as Snap Records in 1979 before evolving into its final incarnation. Named after the Seneca word for "Land of the Crab-apples," the label reflected Vince's deep roots in upstate New York while embracing the rebellious spirit of downtown NYC's punk and rock scene. At a time when racial barriers in the music industry were significant, Vince pioneered a space focused on independent rock and college rock, rather than conforming to expectations for Black-owned labels to specialize in soul, R&B, or hip-hop .

Entrepreneurial Vision
Herbert's entrepreneurial journey was fueled by his rejection of societal limitations. Despite warnings that his Black identity would hinder his success, he pursued his vision with unwavering determination. His approach combined non-traditional elements with seasoned musicianship, creating a signature sound that blurred genre boundaries .

Cheektowaga Records featured a diverse roster of artists, including:

Box 7: One of the first bands signed to the label, representing Brooklyn's rock scene.

Next Generation: A North Carolina-based group contributing to the label's eclectic mix.

Zane Campbell: A flagship artist whose Appalachian roots blended with electric guitar-driven sound.

Xica Jool (also known as Nacha Mendez or Marghereta Cordero): A flamboyant Spanish-American singer who added club-friendly dance music to the label's primarily rock-oriented catalog .

Herbert's path was marked by adversity, including homelessness, racial discrimination, and legal troubles. Yet, these experiences informed the label's ethos and Vince's lyricism, which often explored themes of resilience and identity. Robert Connely Farr grew up in the small southern town of Bolton, Mississippi, home of Charley Patton, Sam Chatmon, Bo Carter & Walter Vinson. He has been mentored in the Bentonia Style of the Delta Blues by Jimmy “Duck” Holmes since 2017. His 2019 release Dirty South Blues was met with widespread critical acclaim, including being named by KEXP’s Greg Vandy Top Albums of 2019 & earning Farr nominations at Canada's prestigious Maple Blues Awards for Songwriter of the Year & New Artist of the Year. Living in MK in the UK, and expressing myself creatively through composing.  Living with my husband and my Staffie, I cook, take out the bins, do a bit of gardening, and not some glorified lifestyle. I meditate and channel new music as it comes. And we do at least one fun thing a day! Staying connected to your inner child is crucial for our sanity!

Hi, I’m Nia, the pen and creative force behind A.N.T.s (Automatic Negative Thoughts).

I’m a songwriter first. Every lyric comes from me, pulled from nightmares, stray thoughts, and maybe a little therapy. I also shape the song styles and sing some of the melodies. For now, I use SUNO-AI Pro as a production tool and Audacity to clean up stems, but my long-term goal is to evolve into DAWs or collaborate with live musicians.

My SoundCloud isn’t monetized! This project is about expression, not profit.

My songs live in the shadows of alternative, nu-metal, post-hardcore, and industrial: confessional, gothic, and raw. Each track begins as a poem, which might explain some of the lyrical edge and structure.
