For OUEMS Mix #019, we have Oxford-based Wotunaz and Sines of Change as part of their newly-formed collective Port of Call, providing us with a lush 60-minute mix that glides through syncopated, atmospheric percussion and immersive reverb-soaked ambience. 

The mix reflects the duo’s move to deep psychedelic dance music - shifting away from their previous focus on high-energy 90s UK dance and Global South genres, and the banality of the many mainstream contemporary electronic spaces. Sines of Change, founder of the Oxford club night ‘Gro-FM’, infuses into the mix his passion for soundsystem music and leftfield electronica, while Wotunaz aims to emulate the campfire drum-circle sound of underground, journey-focused European hubs like Scandinavia and Spain. The result is a firmly club-ready piece which maintains an intricacy and textural hypnoticism equally suitable for thoroughly enjoyable headphone listening too. 

We are eased into the set with the seamlessly interwoven soft synth flourishes of Etch’s ‘Liz’s Track’ and Synkro’s ‘King’s Chamber’. The off-beat drum textures of DJ Ojo slice through the ambience, before Olorun’s ‘Unexpected Pearls’ steadies the beat and guides us softly but surely into club territory. Picking up the tempo with Beatrice Dillon and Call Super’s seminal Hessle Audio release ‘Fluo’, the set settles into an ambient techno groove, peppered with dub-inspired, heavily processed vocal interjections and asymmetric percussion hits.

As we hit half-way, the soaring, delay-riddled arpeggios of Cameo Blush introduce a new movement, defined by more melody, intense percussion, and timbral variety. Tension builds big-time with the rolling snares and fizzing synth design of ‘Cave Walk’ by Soreab, before a 303 acid bassline from contemporary electro legend James Shinra creeps in, subtly hammering away, a nod to the duo’s 90s-inspired dance music background. In the set’s last quarter, the dub influence persists while the ambience returns to the fore, skipping through the minimalist, haunting tones of Sub Basics’ ‘Basement’ before the fluttering melodies of Yushh guide us out. Port of Call bend and warp its pitch, ending the set on that haunting, ambient note so central to the duo’s refined sound. 

The pair, among others, are launching a new project out of Oxford/London focusing on this more long-form, subtle and hypnotic dance music. Tired of increasingly commercial EDM, their aim is to build a passionate and like-minded dance floor, and their OUEMS mix is a perfect showcase. Producers and DJs - message to get involved!

Strangely, I might have been half-asleep when I finished work on this track last night, because I don't remember making some of the choices I made on this one.  

I know I had the idea of a downtempo minimal ambient nearly IDM track, ironically titled "XS" (for Excess).  I wake up this morning and suddenly there's a huge guitar solo in the middle of it...and there's like three voices yelling about income inequality.  

Did I do that?  Did Steve Urkel do that?   

It is true that I've been having problems with getting enough sleep and I have been waking up really early, only after a couple hours of sleep, and start continuing to work on the song repeating endlessly in my headphones while I'd dozed off. 

That was the case with "XS."  And I must have been watching Even More News or Leeja Miller or The Daily Show or John Oliver, just before unexpectedly crashing...and the topic must have been Elon's trillion dollar compensation demand/request/offering...whatever.  

It feels like there's got to be a way to, instead, incentivize corporate owners into stopping the endless cycle of cutting costs, downsizing work forces, ruining unions, ending pensions, and paying out huge executive bonueses for doing so...and instead to push build stable, sustainable, long term, operations that offer good products and reasonable prices while still managing to hold on to a large, well trained, well compensated work force with a sense of security into the future.     

Our richest shouldn't be in the constant pursuit of the endless more for themselves.  Even the Scrooge McDucks of the past used their wealth to build libraries and colleges and hospitals, to fund research or arts organizations that benefit everyone--not gilded immense ballrooms for themselves while being perfectly fine letting Americans starve, or depriving them of their rights and the due process they are guaranteed, or healthcare, or...anything.  

So...as usual, an Interbay song ends up being a delightful hodgepodge of musical ideas and mixed inspirations--that somehow, sometimes at least, share a window into what my brain is thinking (even if that window only opens when I'm mostly asleep.)  

Now--YOU shouldn't sleep on "XS".  Give it a listen!  A like!  Repost it!  Share it!  Add it to a playlist!  Comment on it!  

Don't sleep on Interbay!  A previously unheard Interbay track is being dropped every single day (so far!) for well over a year.  Coming up on 550 consecutive days!

Is this amount of constant content generation a bit excessive?

Bunker - 15/11/2025

Written using the Chinese Orchestra, inspired by soundtracks including Genshin Impact and Kung-Fu Panda. The piece was composed swiftly after writing the percussive introduction in a spur of inspiration. The main melody is first introduced by a wailing suona, accompanied by the dizi and erhu as the piece develops. Needless to say, writing such a percussive and lively piece was an absolute joy to compose!

"Chill Out" is a focused and beat driven tech house track that remains steady and consistent. It's rather mellowed out and not as aggressive as the tracks I have been putting out lately. This one is more about the vibe, percussion and groove than anything else. The initial layers of the track start on the offbeat and drag into place.

ABOUT pippy (that's me, pippy):

enoff have asked who and what is pippy. pippy is pippy, i.e., a silly name with no meaning or basis. the idea of pippy was to create a baseless character for my music to live in, unbound by any sense of seriousness, coolness, likeability. the name and idea of pippy is to provide a 'wtf' response from whomever stumbles upon this page. i do not like creative boundaries, expectations, and preconceived notions. i think a lot of musicians get wrapped up in identity (crisis) and advertise their music with intent of being listened to, and become influenced by what is known to be likeable. i purposefully do not advertise, share, or promote my sounds to retain an honesty and rawness in what i produce. i write from whatever is on my mind, in my mind, at the moment. nearly all tracks are sloppily written in 1-3 hour bursts, and then thats it. 99% of my tracks are completely written from scratch, lots of midi work and many modulations to create a dynamic sound. i try to keep things unpredictable, to a fault.. i become bored very easily, and i enjoy this process i have nailed down. i leave it to the community and the listener to decide if my tracks are worth sharing. as you can see from the numbers, my page is quite lonely. i like it this way. but, if you enjoy what you hear, i leave my promotion in your hands. pippy enjoys creating for the sake of creating, out in the world of pippyland. i encapsulate current emotions in each track, so this is the closest thing i have to a diary. i can recall the mood, state, time, period of each piece, and it is an amazing way for me to recall my past. there is no social media maintained for pippy, no other source for these tracks. just shitty soundcloud, which is quite awful. i should invest more time in expanding to better platforms but i am a creature of habit. if you've read this far, then yer one of the few that is intrigued by the sounds and so i'll continue for u.

original concept for pippy:
pippy was orphaned due to mother passing during birth. the father was totally distraught by pippy's green colored skin, and what appeared to be red hair., as such, abandoned, pippy was sent to work in the ole' mill in the glorious 'Tube City'. pippy enjoyed his work, but one day while having tea in his shack, he heard a shriek. pippy investigated his neighbors box and was shocked to see a dead body. Tube City police arrived shortly after and attempted to arrest pippy. alas, he gave them the ole' pip-slip and made a shabby escape at the local marina. pippy sailed far away to an island where he met garp, a red faced dim-witted creature. pippy enjoyed the peaceful nature of his new life on the island, but eventually the wails came. pippy trapped on the island, was forced to turn himself in! the court hearing occurred immediately and all at once: pippy was to be sent to Penal Planet for execution. the ship took months to arrive at the block. as pippy exited and walked to the gallows, chains sweeping in the distance, he remembered th
