Review: Perfect Days

"Perfect Days" had its world premiere at the 2023 Cannes Film Festival, where it won the festival's Best Actor prize for Japanese star Kōji Yakusho. It would go on to be selected by Japan as their entry for Best International Feature Film at the 96th Academy Awards and would eventually receive the Oscar nomination. As the film expanded to more theaters, Academy Award-nominated director and co-writer Wim Wenders and Yakusho sat with us to discuss their experiences working on the movie. Interviews With "Perfect Days" Director/Co-Writer Wim Wenders & Star Kōji Yakusho

Wim Wenders finds inspiration in Japanese public lavatories in Perfect Days, a slice of life drama about Hirayama, a janitor who finds quiet happiness in his routine of travelling from public convenience to public convenience cleaning, photographing trees in the park, being welcomed at restaurants by proprietors who fetch him his usuals, and reading books before bed. We discuss Wenders' delicate touch and observational eye, Kōji Yakusho's central performance, for which he was named Best Actor at Cannes, how small moments indicate whole avenues of a person's life, and the film's theme of connections between the individual worlds in which we live.

I discovered a pot of poetic supermarket sushi that changed my life. It set me off on an investigation into Japanese philosophy through Wim Wenders’ film ‘Perfect Days,’ a collection of Japanese travel writing ‘Travels with a Writing Brush,’ and my memories of a trip to Japan five years ago, from the green pines of Arashiyama to bright Ukiyoe etchings in Osaka.

Join me and the voices of friends as we try to understand the wonders of Japanese nature, poetry and culture.
