National Poetry Library at 70 Celebration - Part 2/2

A recording from the National Poetry Library's Special Edition series. An event marking the launch of Bi+ Lines, the first ever anthology of bi+ poetry. Hosted by poet and editor Helen Bowell, this evening features Maria Ilona Moore, Rona Luo and Troy Cabida, who perform work from Bi+ Lines and take part in a panel discussion exploring the ideas of in-betweenness, poetics and sexuality. Bi+ Lines

The poet is Paradox (AKA Rodney Paradox, Chris Paradox), who was a popular figure in the London performance poetry scene around 2004-5. I met him at that time, when I was about 19, and this is one of two pieces I composed on his poems. I originally composed the piece on open-tuned guitar, hence the modal quality. The piano in this version was sequenced on Garageband.

Welcome to Twice 5 Miles Radio, I’m your host, James Navé. Today, I’m thrilled to be in conversation with my longtime friend, the one and only Regie Cabico—a poet, performer, and spoken word legend whose impact on the literary world is undeniable.

Regie and I first crossed paths in 1994 at the National Poetry Slam in Asheville. He was a rising star out of New York City, and even then, his performances were electric—raw, fearless, and full of life. Over the years, he’s become one of the most dynamic figures in performance poetry, winning the Nuyorican Poets Café Grand Slam and taking top honors at multiple National Poetry Slams. He’s appeared on HBO’s Def Poetry Jam, NPR’s Snap Judgment, and MTV’s Free Your Mind, not to mention being published in Poetry Magazine, The Outlaw Bible of American Poetry, and The Academy of American Poets platform.

Now based in Washington, D.C., Regie continues to shape the literary landscape, mentoring young poets, teaching performance techniques, and bringing poetry into classrooms, theaters, and communities nationwide. His long-awaited debut full-length collection, A Rabbit in Search of a Rolex, just hit the shelves, blending humor, surrealism, and sharp cultural critique.

In this episode, Regie and I reminisce about our early days in spoken word, explore the evolution of poetry from stage to page, and dig into the deeper truths that poetry reveals—sometimes through hyperbole, sometimes through raw honesty. Whether we’re talking about teaching middle schoolers the art of exaggeration or reflecting on the shifting role of poetry in our lives, one thing is clear: Regie has never stopped pushing the boundaries of what poetry can be.

Twice 5 Miles Radio is an hour-long interview show that digs beneath the surface with people with much to say and the courage to say.  The show's title (Twice 5 Miles) comes from lines in Samuel Taylor Coleridge's poem Kubla Khan. 

I am a poet, storyteller, educator, and manuscript coach with an MFA in Writing from Vermont College of Fine Arts. With over 20 years of experience, I’ve taught workshops on writing, creativity, and public speaking worldwide, drawing from a background that includes memorizing 600+ poems and performing poetic storytelling globally.

My latest book, 100 Days: A Poetic Memoir After Cancer, was published by 3: A Taos Press in May 2023. I’ve also co-authored How to Read for an Audience and Write What You Don’t Know: Ten Steps to Writing with Confidence, Energy, and Flow. Through The Imaginative Storm Writing Project, co-created with Allegra Huston, I guide writers to unlock their creativity and craft impactful, dynamic work.

As co-founder of The Artist’s Way Creativity Camp with Julia Cameron, I’ve taught creativity courses for over two decades. Julia describes me as “a quick, curious mind with a humanist eye for poetic detail and an important force for change.”

I’ve also served as director of The Taos Storytelling and Poetry Festivals and host Twice 5 Miles Radio, a podcast broadcast in Asheville and Taos and streamed on SoundCloud.
