Rosie From The Block & Sean McCabe - Deep Within EP

Rolling deep into the summer, Phuture Shock Musik returns with more hot dubplate pressure via their ‘PSM DUBZ’ series – this time in the form of a collaborative 4-track offering entitled ‘Deep Within’ EP by Bristol’s soulful house don Sean McCabe and Brussels-based rising star Rosie From The Block.

Fast becoming a regular on Phuture Shock, Rosie From The Block makes her third proper outing on the Bristol label, having debuted with ‘Believe In It’ EP back in 2022, and the subsequent ‘Believe In It’ (Remixes) EP released the following year – both of which received wide-ranging DJ support across the broken beat and house scenes.  Since joining the ranks of PSM, the Belgian producer, musician and vocalist has forged strong ties with the Bristol music scene, which has resulted in a number of DJ gigs for various events in the city, connecting with local artists and sowing the seeds for future collaborations – namely this very project here with distinguished producer and DJ Sean McCabe. While McCabe is certainly no stranger to collaboration, the Good Vibrations founder has worked with some of the finest vocal talent in the soulful house genre during his two decade career, through to notable collabs with the likes of Karizma, DJ Spen, Turbojazz and Lay-Far. 
With previous stints on Phuture Shock as a remixer and a joint-artist effort with Karmasound for 2021’s ‘A New Day’ EP, McCabe once again touches base, which marks his second release on the locally-based imprint and second as a collaborator.

Roughly eighteen months in the making, ‘Deep Within’ EP is a truly collaborative project that finds the said artists merging their exceptional talents over three tracks (+ a bonus dub) to whip up a soulful entrée that journeys thru house, broken beat, nu soul, RnB, boogie and even a touch of hip hop; wrapped in conscious lyricism touching on themes of self-reflection to spirituality.

Opening the EP on a mid-tempo tip is ‘Rise Above’, a jaunty bruk soul cut with an uplifting message; that’s centred around a slippery bassline, smooth keys and twisted boogie synth stabs woven into a languid drum pattern, complete with melodic RnB-tinged hooks and some conscious rap lyrics from Rosie to boot - revealing yet another side of her creativity. Next up is the stuttering rhythms of ‘Wake Up’, which picks up the pace while continuing in the broken vein – and lyrically addresses taking accountability for ones actions; underpinned by percussion-laced production that heavily nods to the 00s West London sound; full of bustling hi-hats, chunky bass, and quirky synthlines that slip and slide between the rhythmic framework. On the B-side and rounding out the release to heady effect is the deep house elegance of ‘Water’ where spiritually-toned vox glide across four to the floor beats enveloped by dreamy, oscillating synthwork and slickly placed guitar licks. Before seamlessly entering a musically rich suite of lush jazzy Rhodes chords, warm bass grooves and improvised spacey synth solos venturing late into the after-hours.  The release also comes with an extended dub mix of ‘Rise Above’, giving the more beat-inclined DJ’s a little extra something to juggle with.

Following a slew of impressive releases on the likes of Eglo, Darker Than Wax, People Of Earth, and Musclecars’ Coloring Lessons imprint, the Brooklyn-born artist now debuts on Phuture Shock Musik with a pair of dancefloor-aimed cuts that capture the slick versatility of his productions, whilst pulling influence from the rich sonic lineage of NYC, Detroit and the UK.

Taking up the A-side position is the party-starting jam ‘Goin’ Down’ where a groovy Latin-infused piano loop sits upfront, riding alongside bouncing hi-hats and skittish congas, embellished with bluesy guitar shreds; and cushioned by all manner of exotic percussion, bumpy Dilla-esque kicks and a meandering Rhodes n’ bass groove akin to the dusty, sample-based aesthetic of early 90s hip hop. On the reverse is the nostalgic highs of ‘Sweet Memories’ an altogether deeper affair driven by an insistent 4/4 rhythm pattern with snappy, offbeat claps and hi-hats; across a plume of ethereal keys and jazzy piano notes that interplay with a yearning vocal refrain, and bolstered by deep rumbling subs that takes cues from UK bass music.

Phuture Shock Musik welcomes upcoming Japanese artist Yuu Udagawa to the fold, equipped with a tantalizing slice of future-facing, soulful electronic gear entitled ‘Quantum Blue’. Accompanying the original version of the track is a superb remix by Detroit’s very own Patrice Scott.

Born and raised in Tokyo, Yuu Udagawa has been gaining much traction of late as an exceptionally talented producer and DJ in the electronic sphere, which has seen her land past releases on labels such as Compost, Razor-N-Tape, Cosmocities, and Cyphon recordings. Drawing from a background in art and philosophy, her groovy, analog synth-laden productions elegantly blends elements of house, techno, electronica, hip hop and nu jazz, whilst being guided by Aristotle’s concept of the “golden mean” – a middle ground between two extremes: excess and deficiency.

Having started out as a highly active DJ in the early 00’s, Udagawa soon moved towards production and sound design during the same decade. With plenty of work opportunities landing her way early on, the Tokyo native has had a great deal of her immersive sound art commissioned for everything from museums and art installations to aquariums and fashion brands, not to mention having composed music for Sony Playstation 3’s main menu screen back in 2010. Since then, the artist has self-released a handful of her early productions, whilst constantly honing her craft up until present day - where she has been making a significant breakthrough in the world of contemporary dance music.

Now surfacing on Bristol’s Phuture Shock with her latest offering ‘Quantum Blue’, Yuu Udagawa once again demonstrates her vibrant artistry by further expanding her rich sonic palette. Here, skilfully fusing deep house, nu jazz, soul and 2-step to create something very distinct that transcends genre norms, and feels right at home on Josiah Hartley’s eclectic-minded imprint - to mark the tenth entry in its thriving 10-inch ‘DUBZ’ series.

Taking up the A-side is the original mix of ‘Quantum Blue’, a genre-bending romp which pairs seductive, neo-soul-esque vocals over glimmering chords, euphoric strings, and cascading synth bass grooves that bubble between skippy UKG-inspired beats via Y2K era future jazz; altogether wrapped in beautifully kaleidoscopic synthwork that gives off an otherworldly sheen. On the flip is Patrice Scott’s deeper take on the title cut - opting for a less-is-more approach, the veteran producer/DJ and Sistrum label head strips away the luminous synths prevalent in the OG; adding warm, emotive keys, dubby bass and a sparse, yet funky 4/4 drum track with an unmistakable 313 strut, whilst toying with the vocals, to create an understated rework brimming with introspective, hi-tech soul.
