Here’s our 500th challenge. Almost 10 years ago, the Naviar Haiku Challenge published its first poem, a haiku by Andrea Cecon. To celebrate this landmark, I invited Andrea to share another poem with us.

Andrea Cecon is a hearing aids technician, a traveller, a haijin published all over the world, and also an ebook apprentice. His first ebook won 3rd place in Sharp Writ Book Awards contest in 2011 (category: poetry). Residing in Cividale, Italy, with his wife, Russian haijin Valeria Simonova-Cecon. Enomoto Seifu was a female poet born into a samurai family in 1732. She focused on her writing mostly after her husband’s death in the mid-1750s, and later in life, she became a Buddhist nun. Her works were collected and published after her death by her son.

Natsume Seibi (1749-1816) was the son of a wealthy Edo rice broker and was acquainted with a number of other famous poets, including Oshima Ryota and Kobayashi Issa. In addition to his poetry, Seibi left behind a number of fine examples of haikai prose.

Mark Miller is an award-winning poet and photographer who has published four books of poetry, the latest being Light and Counterlight (Ginninderra Press, 2020), a selection of his haiku from over 400 that have been published in international journals and anthologies. His haiku have been featured on buses and trains, on the walls of a public swimming pool, and on art installations in parks and malls. Mark lives in Shoalhaven Heads, Australia.

The Path to Belonging

I'm a composer, working from a 3' x 5' studio (some may call it a dinette) in a 5th wheel camper, while traveling the United States. I've been on the road for six years, so most of my recent work will have come from a different state (of mind and location) during my travels.

Music makes me feel better about everything. I don't know that I'm ever happier than when I am creating. I sometimes wonder if creativity isn't one of the primary keys to happiness. Do you ever feel better than when you say, "Look what I did."? This phrase magically conjures the purest sense of childlike joy.

Music works for every part of our lives. We all have music for when we are sad, happy, celebrating, meeting others, when we are alone, and even when we are lonely. Did a song come to mind as you read each of those situations? I remember the first song I ever heard on the radio, on my first bus ride to kindergarten. One of my favorite musical memories is playing in a band for steel beach on the flight deck of the aircraft carrier USS Nimitz.

I love telling stories with music. Everybody loves John Coffey in the Green Mile, but Mr. Jingles should have a song commemorating his reaching and joining the circus at Mouseville.
