Robert Jenson once said, “It is a great achievement to know yourself a sinner.” It sounds paradoxical, but to know you’re a sinner puts you (and me) in a place to really listen to what Jesus is saying. Hence the parable of the publican and the pharisee. The dirty rotten scoundrel of a tax collector leaves worship justified, rather than the do-gooding religious adherent, because only he is able to confess that he is a sinner. 
	
It’s not easy to receive this sermon from Jesus (particularly the woes) but somebody has to say such things. One must really know the people to which these words are delivered lest we leave thinking the preacher is talking about other people. 
	
Bashing people with the law achieves nothing unless the one preaching is the One who comes to fulfill the Law. 
	
Martin Luther reminds us that “God receives none but those who are forsaken, restores health to none but those who are sick, gives sight to none but the blind, and life to none but the dead. God does not give saintliness to any but sinners, nor wisdom to any but fools. In short: God has mercy on none but the wretched and gives grace to none but those who are in disgrace.”

The Teaching

Will Willimon tells of having once served a church where there was a long standing tradition in which lay leader would rise at the conclusion of the sermon to offer a prayer. And, one Sunday after preaching a tough sermon on a difficult text, the lay leader stood up and prayed a simple, clear, and direct prayer. “Lord, today we’ve heard your word. And we don’t like it.”

We don’t like this Word of the Lord because it cuts right to the heart of our faith.

It’s impossible to live like this, we think. How could we ever really love our enemies? They’re our enemies for a reason! Shouldn’t we be doing the opposite of love toward them? Have you ever tried to pray for those who mistreat you? Better to run away and never think of them than to pray for them! 
It’s impossible, what Jesus wants us to do.

Thankfully, though, nothing is impossible for God...

Sitting on a park bench, watching people.
Never know just who or what will come by.
A class from 2nd grade, a bunch of weirdos on parade,
A girl I used to know in Junior High.
There’s a man who looks just like Pat Sajak.
I asked him if I could buy a vowel.
I guess he’d heard that before, he said, “Sure, there are four,”
“You wanna buy some more or solve the puzzle now?

A man who asked me if I had a quarter.
I didn’t, but I gave him a dollar bill.
A bunch of kids on skates, a lawyer running late.
Someone’s grandma selling daffodils.
A man came by and asked if he could join me.
I said I didn’t know I was coming apart.
He grinned, told me his name, I grinned back and did the same,
Then for forty-five minutes he opened up his heart.

I should be happy with this life I’ve got.
I should be happy, but I’m ‘fraid I’m not.
I should be happy, but I find, happy’s just a waste of time.
Sadness comes along and smooths things out.

He proceeds to share with me his story.
I could not believe the tales he spun.
Some lives have been charmed, some lives have been harmed,
But my new friend, he’d had neither one.
“Everything I touch,” he said’s, “been middling.
I have never had the highs, nor lows.
You may think that sounds grand, but what you fail to understand,
Is that it gets so lonely with no place to go.

He asked me if I thought I was happy.
I paused to think it through, then I agreed.
“That’s what I once thought,” he said, “Least what I was taught instead
Of looking at my life with honesty.
But I noticed all those peaks and valleys
Started looking like a parking lot.
It was flat, it was square, and it never went anywhere,
I spent all my time just looking for my spot.

I should be happy with this life I’ve got.
I should be happy, but I’m ‘fraid I’m not.
I should be happy, but I find, happy’s just a waste of time.
Sadness comes along and smooths things out.

I’ve been thinking ‘bout this man’s dilemma, pondering the moral of his tale.
Do sad and happy cancel out? Do whispers balance when you shout,
Is winning just the opposite of fail?
Or are they all companions in this journey we’re all in together?
Would life be complete if one was gone?
You gotcha good, you gotcha bad, you gotcha happy and your sad.
