She says I’m a bad boyfriend,
‘Cause I didn’t buy the candy that day,
A stranger gave me that judging look,
Like love had some sugar to weigh.
But she’s the one who hides the sweets,
And tells me “we’ll thank it later,”
Then laughs and says between her bites,
“Maybe you’re not that bad, traitor.”

I’m a bad boyfriend, yeah, that’s what she says,
When I tuck her in and steal her stress,
When I burn the toast but clean the mess,
I’m a bad boyfriend, I confess.
But if bad means care and a heart that bends,
Then I’ll be the worst ‘til the story ends.

She rolls her eyes, I bring her tea,
She says “you’re trying way too hard,”
But smiles when I pull her close to me,
Like I’ve mastered the sweetest art.
She says “you never listen, boy,”
While wearing my favorite shirt,
Then softly laughs and shakes her head,
“Still bad… but it doesn’t hurt.”

When I drive for miles to see her face,
When I clean the mess without a trace

Remembrance of those mornings going slow,
Of laughter spilling through the glow,
Of plates and coffee, quiet grace,
And knowing love had found its place.

The light would sneak beneath the door,

At Last

You can knead slow, some stir fast,
Some will mix the dough so slow
Some will hit them to make them glow
Some light the flame, some make it last,

She asked me once, “What’d you wanna be?”

Not a cowboy, not a star,
Not fixing bikes or playing guitar,
No, I had plans,  a little dark,
A crown, a throne, and a royal spark.

While other kids drew planes and fame,
I drew a flag with my own name,
Said, “Someday I’ll rule the world, you’ll see,”
But really I just wanted company.

Yeah, I wanted to be a dictator,
A tiny tyrant dream creator,
With plastic soldiers on the floor,
And friends I’d buy from the corner store.
I wanted power, I wanted pride,
To hide the tears I had inside,
Now I just laugh,  I’ve changed, you know,
The throne I found was love that grows.

I’d sit alone at lunch each day,
Imagining they’d all obey,
I’d sign fake laws, I’d make fake rules,
Pretend I wasn’t scared at school.

My kingdom small, my heart too wide,
For walls I built to feel alive,
It wasn’t hate, it wasn’t spite,
Just a kid trying to make it right.

So when I told her, she just smiled,
Said, “That’s so you,  poetic and wild,”
We laughed until we cried again,
At that lonely boy who wanted reign.

Can turn to softer, sweeter things,
No more orders, no more fights,
Just quiet peace and shared lights.

And that’s enough  that’s my art,

Now just glows beside your bed.

Yeah, I wanted to be a dictator,
Now I’m just your serenader,
My kingdom’s small, my scepter’s gone,
But you’re the power I lean on.
I wanted pride, I wanted might,
But love just came and made it right,
That broken boy learned to let go 
Turns out hearts make better thrones.

So if my teacher asks again,
I’ll smile and take the pen,
And write, “I’m happy, I’m free, I’m whole 
Love’s the empire that I control.”

Youth Dream

We spilled the box across the floor,
A thousand pieces, maybe more,
All shapes and colors, wild and free,
A mess that somehow looked like me.

You laughed and said, “Where do we start?”
I said, “The edges,  like the heart.”
We lined the corners, one by one,
And watched the picture just begin to come.

At first it felt like nothing fit,
The wrong piece here, the wrong piece lit,
But little by little, through the doubt,
We learned what love was all about.

Piece by piece, we built our sky,
From scattered hopes to reasons why,
Every shape that didn’t seem to belong,
Found its place where it’s been all along.
And when the colors finally met,
The picture we made, I won’t forget,
You and I,  the masterpiece,
And together we placed the final piece.

Some days we forced what wouldn’t go,
Some nights we stopped and took it slow,
The table cluttered, hands unsure,
But love was patient, love was pure.
You’d find a piece I’d thrown aside,
I’d find your smile I used to hide,
And suddenly the chaos made
A perfect sense that never fades.

It’s not about the time it takes,
It’s how the cracks become the shapes,
How every piece we thought was wrong,
Was just waiting for where it belonged.

Piece by piece, we built our sky,

Puzzle

Hands in the mix, the morning’s cold,
The air feels heavy, the flour’s old,
I press and fold, but it fights me back,
Too rough, too dry, it starts to crack.

The clock keeps ticking like a dare,
“Are you sure there’s something there?”
But deep inside, a whisper hums,
“Keep going ‘til the rising comes.”

The mess becomes a mirror now,
And I see myself somehow,
The pain, the push, the breaking ground,
Is where the sweetest things are found.

I was ready to throw it away,
Call it wasted, call it stray,
But time and patience have their say,
And the dough begins to change its way.
Oh, I’ve learned that faith’s not clean,
It’s the cracks where warmth can lean,
And when it rises, I can see

Left a crumb of who I am at heart.
The scent fills up this quiet space,

And suddenly it all feels right,
Like storms that led me to the light.

Growing Strong
