About this track: this composite sound scape splices and recombines in situ field recordings focusing on nonhuman ally communications taken between 2019 and the present in Bonny Doon, California; Portland, Oregon; Winston-Salem, North Carolina; Hamilton, New York; and Bennington, Vermont.

About this project:

In its current iteration, especially when offered as a performance piece, “In memory of feasible grace” combines my ongoing textual experiments with meaning-making formations -- for instance, creating research-informed poetics that use footnotes (sometimes read by robotic or human collaborators) -- with my work as a sound artist, particularly drawing on and inviting in more-than-human field recordings and actors. 

For the Judson Homecoming Weekend [092124], marking at once the Autumnal Equinox, New York City Climate Week, and as we near the end of the Jewish year, and its final month of Elul, I’m thinking about the traditions in that faith that mark this time of year -- and how they weave into what is happening in our ecosystem both as the seasons and our climate change.

The transliteration of the Hebrew phrase describing the accounting of the soul that precedes the Jewish High Holy Days is 'cheshbon hanefesh' -- and I’m asking myself this weekend what this season’s recommitment to sacred activism means... and by inviting you into Ævolutionary Biophilic CoChorus with me, I’m inviting you, too,  to bring our interdependent ecosystem co-creators into the room and into your heart and body. 

I’ve been working on Ævolutionary Theory for just about 15 years, as a question of how we might evolve ourselves and our systems during our lifetimes; this project includes both the material and models some of the protocols I use in that ongoing R+D. This text was originally commissioned and published by a small press, Tea and Tattered Pages, in 2017. The title, “In memory of feasible grace,” was derived from visionary Italian architect and planner Paolo Soleri’s Glossary of Terms, though he never put them together. “Feasible” and “Grace” are two entries near each other, and on the Arcosanti website, one sits atop the other, an accidental compound which I loved, and which seemed to speak to Soleri’s particular brand of dream—one I share, in many ways. When I first saw the prompt for this project I immediately thought of Soleri’s writing on the Urban Mutant, in the back of his 1973 The Bridge Between Matter and Spirit is Matter Becoming Spirit. The resulting work is not about him, or for him, and is not in response to his writings directly, but it became a foil against which to set my own meanderings and postulating on place, self, precarity, and after all, possibility. The dream of a better city -- a better ecosystem -- feels not only like a futurething but like a memory, and it is this I memorialise here, even as I posit that it might, still, be within reach..

This lecture discusses the ancient Greek philosopher Aristotle' work, the Poetics, focusing on his discussion of lexis, usually translated as "diction" or "style", which is the fourth of six dimensions of tragedy that he identifies, and also quite important for epic poetry as well.  After an initial discussion of modes of language, Aristotle distinguishes a number of parts of lexis, including element, syllable, connective, noun, verb, inflection, and statement.  He also discusses the nature and uses of metaphors and neologisms

Aristotle, Poetics - Parts Of Diction (Lexis) - Sadler's Lectures

This lecture discusses the ancient Greek philosopher Aristotle' work, the Poetics, focusing on his discussion about the fourth dimension of tragedy, lexis, generally translated as "diction" or "style". Aristotle provides some guidelines for how to produce excellence in lexis in tragedy and epic poetry. This involves balancing the needs of clarity and non-banality in the language one selects, which in turn requires judicious incorporation of metaphor and loan words, as well as lengthening and shortening the words one uses.

This 40-minute octet features a spatial arrangement with the strings centered in the performance space and the saxophones posted around the perimeter. Tones, players, and quartets sound individually and fuse together into composites, melodic shapes blur into vertical harmony, and just-intonation harmonies are animated as their constituent tones take shape in spatiotemporal patterns.

We are joined by poet and scholar Keston Sutherland to discuss the poetic language used in the works of Marx. In an essay entitled ‘The poetics of Capital’,  Sutherland contrasts Marx’s use of language with that of Henry Mayers Hyndman’s bungled translation of Marx’s Capital, published in 1881, as England for all. As Sutherland notes:
“Marx assaults his reader with the image of beloved limbs ripped up and darling heads crushed flat. Hyndman softens the mental lighting so that these same beloved bodies instead more agreeably just ‘fade away’, ephemeral as an enchanted fairy in a forest dim by Keats. The workers who in Marx are crushed, sucked out, laid waste, decertified, elasticated, tortured and distorted into human specks, stumps and fractions, are by Hyndman regenerated in the language of literary respectability as lyric poets, ‘who now rejoice in the gleam of a transient prosperity, only to be cast into a deeper despair on the next stagnation.”

It isn’t simply enough to understand the intellectual and critical content of Marx’s writings. To fully grasp Marx’s ideas we have to understand Marx’s poetics. As Sutherland notes, Marx’s “Capital is both critique and poetics at once”.

Noah Jenkins is a composer and violinist/violist from Oregon, now living in Chicago. His music is inspired by tuning, field recordings, synthesizers, acoustic phenomena, and experiences of deep sound in deep time.

In 2022 Wild Up premiered Spirits Hover as part of the LA Phil’s Noon to Midnight festival. In 2023 Jenkins developed and premiered After Life (a 40-minute piece with original text for vocalist and ensemble) in Chicago with Après L’Histoire. In 2024 he released Without Persistent Environments (Sawyer Editions), an album of two electroacoustic trombone pieces recorded by Chicago trombonist and composer Riley Leitch. Peter Margasak (Bandcamp) praised the music’s “sustained lines awash in luxurious overtones” and its “focus on the dynamic interaction of sound drifting into eternity.”

In 2025 John Adams will conduct the LA Phil New Music Group in the premiere of Not a dream sound, but a sound which sleeping we had really heard, a work for string orchestra, keyboards, and antiphonal percussion, and ~Nois saxophone quartet and Varo String Quartet will premiere Poetics of Space Translation Symmetry in Chicago.
