Tarihsel aralık açısından sanat tarihçileri iki döneme işaret ediyor:
İlki, 2. Dünya Savaşı sonrası dönem. Milyonlarca insanın toplama kamplarında öldürülmesi ve bundan sonra artık nasıl devam edileceği sorusu. Frankfurt Okulu’nun temsilcisi Adorno’nun, “Auschwitz’ten sonra şiir yazılamaz” sözünün ardından sanatçıların yapıtlarına dikkat çekti. İkinci dönem, 1960’dan günümüze kadar devam eden dönem. Feminizm, çevre hareketlerinin yükselişi, siyah haklar hareketi, 1968’de gençlerin ve işçilerin hareketi açısından önemli dönem. Sanatçıların bunlara karşılık gelen üretimlerini görüyoruz...

Esra Yıldız’ın çağdaş sanata örnek olarak anlattığı sanatçılar ve eserleri:
“Hazır yapıt” terimini literatüre kazandıran Fransız sanatçı Marcel Duchamp - 1917'de Bağımsız Sanatçılar Sergisi’ne gönderdiği ancak reddedilen eseri “çeşme / pisuvar”, modern sanat döneminde olsa bile, çağdaş sanatın kırılma noktası kabul ediliyor.
Çağdaş sanatta önemli bir yeri olan, toplumu sanat aracılığıyla şekillendirmede önemli rolü olan Alman sanatçı Joseph Beuys. Ona göre her insan bir sanatçı. Almanya’da 2. Dünya Savaşı’nda tahrip edilen ve ekolojik yapısı bozulan Kassel kentini canlandırma amacıyla yaptığı “7 bin meşe” çalışması, örnek eserlerden.

Nur Koçak, Nil Yalter ve Sarkis’in de 70’lerden itibaren öncü isimler.
Filmlerin, çağdaş sanatı anlamak açısından önemini vurguladı.
Agnes Varda’nın “Les Glaneurs et la glaneuse” / “Toplayıcılar ve Ben” adlı belgeselinin izlenmesini önerdi, neden önemli olduğunu anlattı.
Çağdaş sanat ve felsefe ilişkisine dikkat çekti, Fransız felsefeci Jean Francois Lyotard’ın 1985'te Paris Pompidou Kültür Merkezi'ndeki sergisinin önemli olduğunu belirtti.

İstanbul Bilgi Üniversitesi Kültür ve Sanat Yönetimi Bölümünde öğretim üyesi. Lisans derecesini Çevre Mühendisliği (İstanbul Teknik Üniversitesi, İTÜ) ve Sosyoloji (İÜ), yüksek lisans (İTÜ) ve doktora derecelerini (İTÜ) Sanat Tarihi bölümünden aldı. Doktora çalışmaları sırasında Technische Universität Berlin’de bulundu. Doktora sonrası çalışmalarını Berlin Humboldt Üniversitesi ve Paris EHESS’te sürdürdü. Critical Arts, African Arts, International Journal of Arts Management gibi dergilerde, Routledge, Intellect, İstanbul Bilgi Üniversitesi Yayınları gibi yayınevlerinden çıkan kitaplarda akademik çalışmaları, makaleleri yayınlanıyor.
Akademik çalışmalarının yanı sıra, Sayfalar Arasında Bir Gölge: Sahaf Vahan (2010) ve Vatansız (2021) belgesel filmlerinin yönetmeni.

What’s now known as “Hyperpop” (and was once known as “Bubblegum Bass”) began in the U.K. in 2013; a mysterious collective known as “PC Music” - created by the one and only A. G. Cook - popped up, seemingly out of nowhere. In collaboration with SOPHIE, PC Music came to "shake it up and make it fizz." ✨💥🫧

From there, the rest is history. Join me in celebrating the legacy (and official end) of one of the most influential musical collectives/pseudo-labels of all time. 🫶💻

In this episode, I play some of the label's most influential hits, and conduct an analysis of PC music's impact: what it had to say about art, camp, irony, Warhol, celebrity culture, and music in the internet age - an era of music that the label itself came to shape in its own image. 💿💞

Vanessa and I talk about her upcoming course with Morbid Anatomy, “The Cut in Creation: Exploring the Avant-Garde, Dada, Surrealism, Modern Art, Noise Music, and Performance Art through a Psychoanalytic Lens.” This course will be taking place on Sundays, from May 25- June 15, and all classes will be recorded for those who can’t make it to the live class for whatever reason.

As the Morbid Anatomy website states: 
Drawing on the theories of a variety of psychoanalysts, including Freud, Lacan and Laplanche, the course will explore the long and rich relationship between psychoanalysis and the fine arts – from painting and music to poetry, collage, photography, film, and performance art, including the use of technology and body modification to explore aspects of identity, gender and sexuality. Through immersion in the work of these artists and psychoanalytic ideas, participants will walk away with a better understanding of the transformative process inherent of the act of creation itself, especially when used as a powerful disruption of narrative, and hopefully feel inspired themselves to create! 

In this discussion, Vanessa gives a sneak peek into each of the four parts of the course. Some highlights are: 

talking about the inspiration for the course;
outlining the events that led to the creation of psychoanalysis as well as the avant-garde movement;
expanding on the historical backdrop – what was happening during these years that created this paradigm shift;
looking at the years leading up to WW1, and what was taking place then, focusing on psychoanalysis and the avant-garde art scenes;
focusing on surrealism and later developments in experimental film, followed by some discussion on the Beat Poets, and outlining how these three are interconnected;
focusing on the birth of pop art, and art as it moved from the galleries to the streets, as well as performance art that included the body as an important vehicle/tool of expression.
