Sanat tarihçisi Osman Erden bugün bizi Andy Warhol’la özdeşleşen Pop-Art akımıyla tanıştırıyor.
Akımın kaygılarını, öncülerini, önemli eserlerini anlatıyor.
“Popüler kültür” diye ciddiye alınmayan pop-art’a farklı bakan Erden’e göre, çağdaş sanatı daha iyi anlamak için pop-art’ı bilmek gerekir.
Osman Erden, pop-art akımının neden önemli olduğunu, bazı sanat tarihçilerinin “popüler kültür” diye eleştirdiği bu akımın öncülerini, “yüksek kültür ile kitle kültürü arasında hiyerarşik ayrım görmeyen, kitle kültürünün de en az yüksek kültür kadar önemli olduğu” yaklaşımını, öncülerini, kaygılarını, önemli eserlerini anlatıyor.

“Çağdaş sanatı anlayabilmek için, giriş yapmak için pop-art’ı tavsiye ederim. Sadece hoş vakit geçirme alanı olarak değil, entelektüel birikim, ortaya çıktığı dönemi siyasi, sosyolojik ve konjonktürel olarak da çok iyi açıkladığı için önemli” diyor, Osman Erden. Bir resimde, gündelik hayatta kullandığımız sıradan objeler, parfüm şişesi, araba görürseniz, pop-art ile ilişkilendirebileceğinizi, söylüyor.

Sanatı müzelerden, yüksek kurumlardan çıkararak hepimizin gündelik hayatı yapan bu akımı popülerleştiren Andy Warhol’un eserlerini anlatıyor. Onun Marilyn Monroe portresindeki hüzne dikkat çekiyor, portrelerden sonraki “ölüm ve felaketler dizisi”ni anlatıyor. Erden’in verdiği bilgilere göre, Türkiye’de ondan esinlenen sanatçılarımız var: Nur Koçak, Gülsün Karamustafa, Burhan Doğançay, Özdemir Altan, Halil Altındere...

Osman Erden, Mimar Sinan Güzel Sanatlar Üniversitesi Sosyal Bilimler Enstitüsü Batı Sanatı ve Çağdaş Sanat programında "Nasyonal Sosyalizmin Alman Sanatına Yansıması" başlıklı yüksek lisans tezini tamamlamasının ardından "Türkiye'de Güncel Sanat Alanını Şekillendiren Unsurlar" başlıklı teziyle doktor ünvanını kazandı.
Erden halen Mimar Sinan Güzel Sanatlar Üniversitesi Sanat Tarihi Bölümü'nde doktor öğretim üyesi olarak görevini sürdürüyor.

UNESCO'ya bağlı Uluslararası Sanat Eleştirmenleri Derneği (AICA) Türkiye Şubesi’nin 2008-2011 yılları arasında yönetim kurulu üyeliği, 2011-2014 yılları arasında başkanlık görevlerini yerine getiren Erden’in 2016’da Modern Sanatın Kısa Tarihi adlı kitabı yayınlandı. Erden halen “Erken Modern Dönem Sanatı” ve “Almanya’da Nazi İktidarının Kültür Politikaları” başlıklı kitaplar üzerine çalışmalarını sürdürüyor.

Frankfurt Okulu’nun temsilcisi Adorno’nun, “Auschwitz’ten sonra şiir yazılamaz” sözünün ardından sanatçıların yapıtlarına dikkat çekti. İkinci dönem, 1960’dan günümüze kadar devam eden dönem. Feminizm, çevre hareketlerinin yükselişi, siyah haklar hareketi, 1968’de gençlerin ve işçilerin hareketi açısından önemli dönem. Sanatçıların bunlara karşılık gelen üretimlerini görüyoruz...

Esra Yıldız’ın çağdaş sanata örnek olarak anlattığı sanatçılar ve eserleri:
“Hazır yapıt” terimini literatüre kazandıran Fransız sanatçı Marcel Duchamp - 1917'de Bağımsız Sanatçılar Sergisi’ne gönderdiği ancak reddedilen eseri “çeşme / pisuvar”, modern sanat döneminde olsa bile, çağdaş sanatın kırılma noktası kabul ediliyor.
Çağdaş sanatta önemli bir yeri olan, toplumu sanat aracılığıyla şekillendirmede önemli rolü olan Alman sanatçı Joseph Beuys. Ona göre her insan bir sanatçı. Almanya’da 2. Dünya Savaşı’nda tahrip edilen ve ekolojik yapısı bozulan Kassel kentini canlandırma amacıyla yaptığı “7 bin meşe” çalışması, örnek eserlerden.

Çağdaş sanat ve felsefe ilişkisine dikkat çekti, Fransız felsefeci Jean Francois Lyotard’ın 1985'te Paris Pompidou Kültür Merkezi'ndeki sergisinin önemli olduğunu belirtti.

İstanbul Bilgi Üniversitesi Kültür ve Sanat Yönetimi Bölümünde öğretim üyesi. Lisans derecesini Çevre Mühendisliği (İstanbul Teknik Üniversitesi, İTÜ) ve Sosyoloji (İÜ), yüksek lisans (İTÜ) ve doktora derecelerini (İTÜ) Sanat Tarihi bölümünden aldı. Doktora çalışmaları sırasında Technische Universität Berlin’de bulundu. Doktora sonrası çalışmalarını Berlin Humboldt Üniversitesi ve Paris EHESS’te sürdürdü. Critical Arts, African Arts, International Journal of Arts Management gibi dergilerde, Routledge, Intellect, İstanbul Bilgi Üniversitesi Yayınları gibi yayınevlerinden çıkan kitaplarda akademik çalışmaları, makaleleri yayınlanıyor.
Akademik çalışmalarının yanı sıra, Sayfalar Arasında Bir Gölge: Sahaf Vahan (2010) ve Vatansız (2021) belgesel filmlerinin yönetmeni.

What’s now known as “Hyperpop” (and was once known as “Bubblegum Bass”) began in the U.K. in 2013; a mysterious collective known as “PC Music” - created by the one and only A. G. Cook - popped up, seemingly out of nowhere. In collaboration with SOPHIE, PC Music came to "shake it up and make it fizz." ✨💥🫧

From there, the rest is history. Join me in celebrating the legacy (and official end) of one of the most influential musical collectives/pseudo-labels of all time. 🫶💻

In this episode, I play some of the label's most influential hits, and conduct an analysis of PC music's impact: what it had to say about art, camp, irony, Warhol, celebrity culture, and music in the internet age - an era of music that the label itself came to shape in its own image. 💿💞

Vanessa and I talk about her upcoming course with Morbid Anatomy, “The Cut in Creation: Exploring the Avant-Garde, Dada, Surrealism, Modern Art, Noise Music, and Performance Art through a Psychoanalytic Lens.” This course will be taking place on Sundays, from May 25- June 15, and all classes will be recorded for those who can’t make it to the live class for whatever reason.

As the Morbid Anatomy website states: 
Drawing on the theories of a variety of psychoanalysts, including Freud, Lacan and Laplanche, the course will explore the long and rich relationship between psychoanalysis and the fine arts – from painting and music to poetry, collage, photography, film, and performance art, including the use of technology and body modification to explore aspects of identity, gender and sexuality. Through immersion in the work of these artists and psychoanalytic ideas, participants will walk away with a better understanding of the transformative process inherent of the act of creation itself, especially when used as a powerful disruption of narrative, and hopefully feel inspired themselves to create! 

In this discussion, Vanessa gives a sneak peek into each of the four parts of the course. Some highlights are: 

talking about the inspiration for the course;
outlining the events that led to the creation of psychoanalysis as well as the avant-garde movement;
expanding on the historical backdrop – what was happening during these years that created this paradigm shift;
looking at the years leading up to WW1, and what was taking place then, focusing on psychoanalysis and the avant-garde art scenes;
focusing on surrealism and later developments in experimental film, followed by some discussion on the Beat Poets, and outlining how these three are interconnected;
focusing on the birth of pop art, and art as it moved from the galleries to the streets, as well as performance art that included the body as an important vehicle/tool of expression.

Originally from the Wirral (OMD land!), I now live in London. Almost all of my career was in IT, Project Management and lack of time and technology meant I never really pursued a music career. The lockdown and technology advances have meant I could teach myself and learn to compose songs. I don’t like to stick to one genre but rather try and ‘parody’ styles. Some melodies have been in my head for years and in some cases words have changed over the years. My aim is really to creat a ‘potpourri’ of sounds such that someone somewhere will enjoy something on here!!!!
