Youth Landscapers Collective is a youth arts organisation based in the National Forest area of England. We’re a collective of young people, artists and technicians who collaborate with our local community to explore this landscape’s industrial past and forest future.

In this episode we want to give you a sense of how we work together. YLC member Kris Kirkwood has built a sound narrative of our 2024 song-making project, using audio recordings from our sessions - from the seeds of our ideas through to performance. Here’s a bit of context about the project, to help set the scene:

In 2023, YLC created The Stage of Possibility – a vibrant, democratic space designed, built and curated by YLC to showcase stories and voices from the National Forest at Timber Festival. The project connected us back to the creative and resourceful communities that grew from the former coalpits and pipe works of this area. 

In 2024 we wanted to strengthen that connection and also perform together on the stage too! We created a set of locally inspired songs, in a project we called: WAYANNAEYINANYONNIT  (A Big Story).

Working with artists Rebecca Lee and Jessica Harby and our community we sought out the hidden stories of our local area, finding them in discussions with former mining engineer, pipe worker, and co-founder of Moira Replan Graham Knight, research visits to Moira Furnace Museum and The Magic Attic Community Archive, and sharing our own personal experiences. 

From Graham we learned stories of injustices small and large in the mine - the disappearance of cakes sent down for overtime workers and the tragic death of a young co-worker in an accident. From Clyde at Magic Attic we learnt local dialect and the definition and pronunciation of our title: WAYANNAEYINANYONNIT. 

More than anything we responded with heart to what it must have felt like to take part in each of these stories and what it's like to be living here today, many of our houses built over the unfilled mining tunnels.

The songs we made and performed share our experience of the National Forest, as the past, present and future overlap, canaries sing, children climb on the lime kilns, new words are shouted, and we make sure we're all alright.

How many of you guys take actions and make choices to like improve your health, your physical health? To improve your household, to improve your relationships, to recycle, to eat more vegetables, to do what you know makes your life easier and makes your body feel better?

So there's that reality of self-improvement, and then there's the reality of including the spirit world/living with spirits that is this very weird niche addition of ease, peace, and possibility. 

I'm realizing how unusual this perspective that I have is, which is that including entities actually makes the world a lighter, brighter, easier space and place. And that's not even my perspective, that is my reality. 

What is your reality with entities that you have maybe never claimed, owned, or acknowledged, and will you start to destroy and uncreate what you're doing to invalidate your reality around the spirit world, cognitively and non-cognitively?

Wie viele von euch kennen Leute, oder ihr seid vielleicht sogar diese Person, bei der alles, was sie besitzen, entweder kaputt oder verloren ist, oder sie zerstören es, oder es gibt immer Probleme, oder sie können sich einfach nicht um die Dinge in ihrem Leben kümmern?

Wenn du das Bewusstsein von etwas ehrst, wird es für dich wesentlich besser funktionieren.

Vor Jahren hatte ich einen VW-Bus, und eines Tages ging mir das Benzin aus. Ich rief meinen Vater an, und er brachte mir Benzin, füllte es in den Wagen und fuhr danach weg.

Ich fuhr los und das Auto fuhr wie ausgewechselt! Es war schneller, es fühlte sich besser an, alles im Auto fühlte sich einfach besser an! Ich rief Gary an und fragte: "Was hast du mit meinem Auto gemacht?"
Er sagte: "Ich habe es einfach anerkannt."

Für mich war das der Beginn der Erkenntnis, dass unser Bewusstsein oder der Mangel an Bewusstsein einen großen Einfluss auf die Struktur von allem hat - Häuser, Autos, Körper und so weiter.

Was ich euch gerne geben würde, ist erstens die Einsicht in die Kraft, die ihr besitzt, und zweitens die Fragen, die Methoden und die Wege, wie ihr darauf zugreifen und eure kreativen Fähigkeiten mit Häusern oder Wohnungen wirklich nutzen könnt.

Welcher Energie, Raum und Bewusstsein kannst du und dein Körper sein, um alle Energien in deinem Haus mit völliger Leichtigkeit zu verändern und zu transformieren?

At the age of 15, Jörg Söls, better known as Dj Koolbreak started doing his thing as a dj. In 2004 he became a member of G-Spot Sound, one of austrias biggest reggae and dancehall soundsystems. Since than he is rocking clubs weekly and he is famous for his mixtapes and remixes. When you ask Koolbreak about the most important thing when you are at the Party, his answer is always the same: „It is all about the vibes“.
